I've been having a look through the xml files, and I wondered.

Is it possible for coastal squares to be trade routes in the same way that rivers are trade routes? if so what needs to be edited?
In some of my games I have had resources on single tile islands within my cultural borders, but cant get to them without building a city on said island. (which isnt always practical)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Unfortunately though that only goes for trade between cities.
Ive also noticed that rivers cant be used to connect your resources as I originally thought. Which poses a different problem entirely.

I was under the impression that building a road to a river from the resource and the river going to the city or going to a road which goes to the city would.

As long as there is a road, river, or coastline resources can be traded.

Astorian points out that resources on an island cannot be connected to the mainland unless there is also a city on that island. This puts the player in quite a pinch if the island is already within 2 tiles from its city.

I'd agree that this is bug, but make sure there is a road on the resource (even if it is a 1x1 island), the appropriate improvement has been built, and that Sailing has been researched. I haven't experimented with this so who knows if something actually needs to be fixed.
