Was browsing through a rather large abandonware site looking for nice classic games that I used to play a long time ago, just to get some nostalgia.

Found Colonizatin for Windows among the abandonwarez. Thought that it had not been released as abandoned yet, but might be wrong since both the game and the manual was on the site.

The large abandonware sites are usually picky when it comes to the legal manners since they dont want to be shut down and prosecuted. So my question is, is col for windows really abandonware? Have the DOS version, but have never tried out the win one but dont want to download it until Im really sure it is legal to do so.

Yea, that's the trick: check it at The Underdogs!

Didn't you just answered your own question?

The win version is on The Underdogs, thats why I started to wonder if it was abandondware. The DOS version isnt there and it seems strange that one version is abandoned but not the other.

If the Win version is available through Underdogs there's a good chance that it is abandonware because AFAIK the conglomerate responsible for royalties had made representations to it and other abandonware sites regarding the need to abide by its requirements.

This is because the Windows version is buggier than an ant farm.

DOS Version is the way to go for Colonization.

I've found only two bugs in the windows version. First: The drag and drop interface somtimes stops woking in the colony screen. Second: If you order a ship to "go to" in an area covered by Fog of war and the ship can't get there, the game crashes sometimes. If there's more, I haven't discovered them.

I've been able to find it at places that sell used PC games. Or you could check Ebay.

Is it possible, by the way, to use the music from the DOS version in the Windows version? I once bought a rerelease of the DOS version, but I like the Underdogs Windows version more because theresolution is so much higher. Half the map fits on my screen :)

But it has no music, and the music was very good. Can I somehow use the DOS version's music in the Windows version?

I'm wondering this as well. I've got a laptop with the dos version (and Win95), but no CD rom drive, and copying those music files for windows would take too many floppies. Plus, I think it runs in 640x480 instead of 320x200 :)

...abandonware is not legal

Oh man. Reading this just made me HAVE to find a way to get Colonization running again. I think the music might have been the best part of it. And yes, the music in the Windows version was awful!
