[NFP] Compound Unit Formation Change

@MrRadar Interesting question... also I was curious how they implemented this feature.
The answer is: it remains "resource free" if you choose it as the primary one while merging, it looses that feature if you choose it as a secondary unit.
It is implemented as a modifier attached to a unit with EFFECT_ADJUST_UNIT_IGNORE_RESOURCE_MAINTENANCE. Pretty neat. JOSE_DE_SUCRE uses the same trick.

Does someone know what happens to the xp bonus? Like if you have an old unit built without encampment, and the other one with armory, how does the corps get xp afterwards?

Another adjustment (maybe critical adjustment) is that the mechanism of corps/armies changed in NFP.

Before, when you combine 2 units into a corp/army, the combined unit always carry the exp and promotions of the one with the larger exp.

Now, the combined unit carry the exp and promotions of the both units! If you combine 2 units with 1 promotion, the combined unit starts with 2 promotions if you promote the 2 units differently!

An example. The field cannon has 5 promotions and 186 experience, typically a unit needs 225 experience to get 5 promotions on standard speed, however this unit is combined from a 4-promotion unit and a 1-promotion unit, and the combined unit automatically gains 5 promotions.

This means in NFP you only need a level-4 unit and a level-3 unit to get a fully-upgraded corp.

yeah it's been mentioned in another thread lately. Plus the unit you choose when building the corp/army has an impact now; It's the one that will be created, no randomness like before.

Thanks for sharing. Changes strategies here a lot. I haven't made my mind up yet, if I like that change… One question: Does taking over exp from both units mean that forming a corps can mean an instant promotion? Take as extreme case two units without any promotions, but both just being one exp away from their first promotion - will the formed corps then instantly have a promotion and X exp left towards the next (2nd) promotion?

I don't remember seeing this in the changelog, is that a feature or a bug? It sound more like a bug for me, it seems a bit overpowered.

It doesn´t really make sence, combining two semi-rookies shouldn´t create a veteran commando.

More realistic would be something like (promo+promo)/2.

Exactly. When I was reading the first post of this thread, before I got the the 3rd sentence, I started to think that they changed it in this exact way (average of the level of the two units), because that was the only change I could think of. Making it as a sum of the promotions of both units is silly.

Is it possible to create air fleets? e.g Bombers?

No. I don't think UI even could support such an action because usually air units are "hidden" in aerodromes / carriers, so you can't select 2 of them at the same time.
Besides, bombers are OP already, can you imagine +17 bomber squadron or whatever they called?

Actually, combining the promotions makes sense, since you now have a corp etc. which includes of the expertise that was in all the originally separate groups. I agree that exp. should probably be averaged and next promotion should be based on total promotions, but I don't think it's too beg a deal by the time you reach the point where you can do this. I think this is a great change - which I hadn't even noticed! I especially like it since I often didn't combine certain units so as not to lose some of the promotions I had built up.

Does anyone know or has observed which promotion strategy the AI uses? I wonder if their behaviour was adjusted (given that they ever took promotions into acoount when combining units) and - if they don't pay attention at all - whether the old or new rules were/are better for their performance.

Has that changed because you used to be able to.
I know you could build fleet/armada, but not combine aircraft carriers into fleet/armada.

No. I think only xp from the primary unit remains because this is how it worked before the patch. Really, Firaxis just added promos for free and that's the only change imho.

Correct. I tested with combining two unpromoted Runner units, one with 9/15 exp, the other with 14/15 exp. The Corps has 14/15 exp. then. So beside combining units with different promotions now, it still makes sense to combine a unit close to next promotion with one having (almost) no exp earned towards it.

I think because of the promotion-combining I will produce even less Corps and almost no Armies in my cities in future - the production you can save is likely overshadowed by the quality you get for efficient combining.
