I've noticed that the computer sometimes changes the roles I have given Colonists :( (without telling me either.)

For example, I founded a new Settlement with two Colonists and put one on Fishing and the other in the Town Hall.
After a couple of turns, the Settlement showed the starvation warning (City size goes pink).
When I investigated, the Fishing Colonist had been changed to a Lumberjack.

Has this happened to anyone else?
Is there a way to tell the computer not to alter anything I do?

you colons must be in auto mode (near the rebel bar), just desactivate this

if you have a carpenter in a lumberhill and no lumber, he or another colon may strat chopping lumber to allow him to work

I'll check this out - thanks!

Also if an enemy ship (eg a Pivateer) approaches your colony the game might re-assign your fisherman without telling you.

I can see that. :)
However this was an inland Settlement with no enemies nearby...

Recently during the War when the King attacked from onboard a ship, the computer took an Elder Statesman, made him a soldier and got him killed. :(
I had plenty of Dragoons and fortified Cannon - why does the computer not use them?

Because Dragoons and artillery aren't defesive units. I don't think that the ai should be making decisions like that though.......

But a Cannon (strength 3) in a Settlement receives a 50% defensive bonus, plus it was fortified.

Is the game saying that if defending a Settlement with a big defensive bonus (e.g. 100%), it's better to use Soldiers of strength 3 (who get that bonus, taking them up to 6), rather than Dragoons of strength 4 (who don't get defensive bonuses?
If so, I'd better leave some units unmounted!

if the game use the best defense available, it won't use a dragon to protect a city if there are guns in there

if it's a dragon's assault, it must be the same even if there is a canon in the colonie (they got bonus vs canon, but not vs soldier)

if your canon attack during the turn before the assault it's probably not fortified yet (never check this now that i think about it)

You can NOT fortify Dragoons and Cannons, only foot soldiers. So, don't keep dragoons as a defensive force in your towns. If you need to, rather make them dismount and then make them dig in (fortify).

Keep in mind: King's Regulars get +50% bonus on settlement attack, and king's Artillery gets a whooping +150 bonus to settlement attack. your poor diggin-in grunt gets 5% defense bonus per turn, max 25%. Yay to him!
So, the seashore settlements during the WOI=deathtraps.

Your defenders also get +50% RS bonus (when your overall sentiment reaches 100%) +10% from Dom Pedro's veteran bonus + further veteran promotion bonuses + minuteman promotion bonuses + the formation promotion bonus (25% against dragoons) so they are not exactly helpless.
