When you directly connect two of your cities via a road, they will both have access to resources in each city (e.g. cows)

What happens if you have a city on the west and one on the east with a foreign civ’s city in-between?

If I connect the eastern city to the foreign civ, and then connect the western city to the foreign civ, will my two cities both have access to each others resources, (assuming open borders with the foreign civ) or do the cities have to be connected directly?

Thanks,

GG

As long as you have an Open Border agreement with the civ in between then your two cities will be connected.

Or with harbors and the appropriate techs, they can connect via the ocean.

...Or with airports, two cities will be connected regardless of their locations.

Harbors? Airports? Did I wander into the Civ3 forum? :p

In Civ4, a coastal city only needs the appropriate tech (sailing for coast; astronomy for ocean) to be connected and airports don't do a thing for your trade network.

Hmm, you're right, I was momentarily back in the mindset of Civ3. Whoops!

Thanks Guys,

I asked because I have a city that's half a world away from my primary group of cities, and there are numerous civs in-between.

There are so many roads going every which way, I can't tell for certain if I'm connected. I guess I'll just set a couple of workers to auto build trade networks.

You can always mouse over tiles you're not sure about. The info box will tell you whether or not there's a road on that tile. :)
