I think there should be a certain chance to be able to conquer units, which have also a defense. I mean in times of war troops ever conquered enemy equippment. There were Russian FW 190 fighter as well as German Shermans or T 34. So if you are victorious against an enemy unit there should be a chance that you can get such a unit which was just loosing the fight. The same is when conquering harbours or air fields. These units should be conscript forces with only 1 HP left to simulate that your soldiers have not much captured and have not much knowledge about the stuff.

Would the captured units just become free workers? I doubt they'd fight for your civ but they'd make good free labor. I'd also like to throw in the idea for CivIV that civs could possibly capture technologies by capturing enemy units.

Most likely enemy won't fight by your side, but you still can use their equipment. And you could only capture (of course) armored units, artillery, planes and missiles.

I suppose when you capture the artillery pieces, you are simultaneously capturing a factory to make ammunition for it, yes?

Ammunition was never a big problem. If you have the ammo you can reproduce them. German ww1 tank A7V was using a Russian gun. So I think capturing equipment should be possible. So you can only capture artillery, ships, planes and armoured units.

I guess you can produce ammunition if you have one copy of it and resources you need. I think it isn't so impossible job to copy ammunition.

Sure, copying the ammo just means retooling a factory. Which usually means you have one less factory producing your regular ammo. It also means you need a specific supply line dedicated to that unit, due to the non-standard supply requirement.

This all assumes the enemy didn't spike the cannons, and that your guys can be trained up on unfamiliar equipment just as easily as their regular stuff.

Basically, using captured equipment as general issue comes with so many issues that no serious modern army would do it. Irregulars and guerillas will of course, but that isn't what you were suggesting.

I had pretty much WW2 in my mind, when capturing enemy vehicles etc. was gold mine. Especially for poor military country as Fin was ;)

And I think I'm not very wrong here if i say that they changed caliber for most captured tanks, to suit with own regular ammunition.

I'm not sure about all of this, but I think that when you you capture a city, you should also capture (at least half of) the ships and planes that are stationed in that city.

Indeed. Some should be able to be scuttled/ destroyed but some can be used by you. So you can use these units. Also you can reequip the units with your own guns. I mean you can build in a P 51 Mustang instead of the HS MGs German MGs. That´s why the captured units should be damaged and only regular or conscript to simulate these effects.
