Another quick question. Are the effects of the Copernicus Observatory and Newton's University wonders compounded. Both double the science output of a city, but if I build both in the same city, will it be quadrupled?
My understanding is that the effect of libraries and universities are multiplicative (times 1.5 for each), so it doesn't matter whether you double before or after the city improvement's bonus. Or is the formula more complicated than that?
You don't necessarily need to build them in two different cities - just try and build them in the city(s) with the highest base commerce (eg. lots of bonus resources that give commerce bonuses, rivers etc).
I think the formula WAS cumulative in Civ2. With both a lib and a uni you got 225% instead of 200% (a little less than 225%, in fact, due to numbers being rounded down after each step of the calculation). And the same applied to Wonders, economic buildings etc. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct (I think...) In CivII there was a drive to build a Super Science City - simply because of the cumulative effects - add in the colossis for extra commerce as well.
but if it's the best commerce city, it's still best to put both newton's and copernicus in the same one. had been wondering about this myself recently, although more worrying that the second one built in the same city would have no effect
It is still possible to get huge science outputs from one city. In vanilla/PTW the key is the Collossus which will greatly increase the base commerce output, then build Copernicus etc. there. In conquests, tourism increases the base output, so your best wonder producing city is often also your top commerce city. Playing OCC(one city challenge) is a nice way to see these things in action.
