After a quick test compairing republic to democracy in two large cities, I found that corruption has a significant effect on both the amount of trade arrows produced from trade routes and also the original bonus.

...just like in RL :D :D :D

(more seriously, you are perfectly right: reduced corruption means improved profitability; that is why it is so efficient to switch from Despotism to Monarchy ASAP, and also to switch from Republic to Democracy, provided you know how to face happiness problems)

Is the effect of corruption really so signification. I'll have to try it out. Until now I haven't thought much about corruption: my favourite goverment is Communism, because of its fast research.

Ussually better government is my main goal in researching technologies, so I rarely experience the negative effects of corruption for lengthened periods of time.

Corruption can be really significant. Lets say your cities have an average of 4 in corruption and you have 20 cities, that means you lose 80 gold or beakers every turn. I'm sure anyone can think of numerous better ways to spend that.:)

If I want fast research and loads of cash, I usually switch to democracy, not communism. Democracy gives you one more trade per square already producing trade. To get that in communism, you need to celebrate. If you celebrate properly in democracy though, you'll experience super growth, meaning you can grow your empire 50% in a few turns. Imagine what a 50% empire increase can do to you trade and production...

Democracy is a bit harder to handle though, takes some time to get used to and sometimes there is a period just after you've switched where you experience some trouble. But in the long run, this is often the best way to grow trade, production and your empire.:)

Funxus, my findings show that you suffer even more if you have trade routes. A more detailed explaination of my test is as follows:
1:Started a game on normal size map with three players.
2:Chose two sites that would provide good trade, founded capitols away from the "test cities" and founded test cities.
3: Improved all neccesary land around the cities and forced both govts to republic.
4: Gave all techs, took away flight, gave one city superhighways, gave the other city (which had rivers) collosus and superhighways.
5: In republic, the collosus city had 40tr/55cor and the other had 27tr/32cor.
6: The bonus went from 2144 in rep to c.3900 in demo and rep trade was +12, demo trade was +22.

Does a road to the capitol affect corruption? I have found a thread at CFC that says yes and one at Apolyton that says no (I think).

IIRC a road to the capital lowers corruption, if built on the "direct path".

Corruption has a significant effect on both Trade Routes and caravan/freight Delivery Bonuses. I did some tests on it a year or so ago, looking at the trade route issues, and it seemed to hit in two parts, one related to the base trade (without trade routes) and one related to the trade routes. There is also some sort of a rounding factor related to trade between your own cities that I did not nail down either. I believe the Delivery Bonus still calculated correctly if you use the reduced base trade amounts (separating out the reduced trade routes is kind of guesswork).

Corruption increases the further you are from the capital. I don't recall off the top of my head if anyone has done formal analysis on it. There may be a factor for number of cities as well. Building a "critical path" trade road to the capital seems to have the same effect as Courthouse, reducing corruption loss by about half. I don't think they are cumulative, though.

Re-reading the thread, it appears that:

A "direct" road to the capital has no effect on corruption , but it reduces waste (multiplies waste by 2/3).

Hmmm - I shall have to make time to retest that, but I was fairly certain there was an effect. The thread you listed above looks like it was from the time before ST actually started playing real games... amazing how much he generated before his first landing!
