I know corruption is bad, very bad indeed ;)... I know it makes the population unhappy, and I know there is a connection to the distance from the capital - but are there any more specific data?

For instance, how, exactly, is the effect on the economy?
How is it coherent with the palace distance?
And exactly how does it make the population unhappy - or is it the courts that make them happy?

Corruption doesn't make citizens unhappy directly. It makes them unhappy when, say, your city makes 10 trade and 7 of them are wasted to corruption. The people aren't getting luxuries that they would if collecting on all 10. Just goto democracy and forget it.

So corruption wastes luxuries? Well that explains a great deal...

Apolyton has some answers (the link is elsewhere in Civ Fan). Key points:

Corruption is a factor in the early gov'ts.

Number of cities makes a difference (-).

Distance from capital makes a difference (-).

Court house decreases it by 1/2.

I don't know much but, i'll try to help...

Umm yes courthouses lower(if not eliminate corruption)

And well the best way to solve it is by swithcing to democracy and if u can't then just cope with it.
