Cost to raise/lower terrain

I was fighting a war with Yang, who was on a different continent from me, but one of his bases was on a little bulb-shaped peninsula only connected by one tile, so I sent over a sea former, and kept flying interceptor units over it to protect from Hive air forces, and I told it to lower the terrain, It only cost me 24 credits of something tiny like that. after the terraform was done, that city was cut off from the rest and I took it over. I tried the same thing with another city (park a former on the coast, tell it to lower terrain) but it was asking for over 1000 credits (which I didn't have)

does anyone know why there would be such a crazy jump in the price to lower terrain?
 
Because its the real hight that matters.
If you want to teraform a 999m high tile up its cheaper than a 1m high.
 
I thought It would just move the terrain a certain amount: ie: 1000m becomes 200 m, 200 becomes 3000, etc. and was always a set amount, and therefore a set cost.
 
I thought it was the true ammount of terraforming done. Often when you terraform a tile, it forces adjacent tiles to move as well, and thus you are indirectly forming all of tiles too, and the cost reflects that. This is a guess based off a game where i wanted to max out my solar collectors as fast as i could, so i had one former raise a single tile 3x - the last one cost waaaaay more than the previous two combined.
 
I think I've tried doing it, but it's useless. If you want to terraform up, use tectonic missiles, such as yo're in a state of global warming or you can't be bothered transporting units so you do the Old Moses lifts up the water. But, if you got a former to terraform down at a coast and sea former to terraform up at a shoreline, wouldn't they be destroyed? Like, the formers sink and the sea formers run aground?
 
It won't let you perform that action. and formers cannot terraform down when the result will put them underwater and vice versa for sea formers
 
Stupid Deidre raised terrain that had the effect of connecting her continent to mine, so i try to lower it again, and it tells me that would start a war. :mad:
 
biggest douchebag move on the part of the AI: They can raise terrain to connect continents, but if you wanna lower it back, you have to move over a few tiles so that the terraform won't have any effect on THEIR land.
 
Well Deedee has been a major . .. .. .. .. ., and now she's getting spanked. I don't understand why a pacifist is causing me such greif when I'm running democracy and green.
 
I had the same thing happen last game, I was Democracy, Green, Knowledge, and she started probing my bases and then went to war with me 4 or 5 times, until i wiped her out, Turns out she was at odds with Zakharov because she had been running power Values, and Zak was my ally, so I'm evil too apparently.
 
This might explain why certain areas of the map become from sea to land. Long ago, I was Morgans and I was on an island. There was an adjacent island occupied by the Gaians. Then, unexpectedly the islands became connected. They were split by only a tile before it happened, but I defeated the Gaians eventually. :mischief:
 
yeah the AI is notoriously evil for it's Island hopping strats.

I still think the AI in SMAC is harder to beat than any other CIV games, the AI's in those all seem like pushovers.

which civ do you have? I have civ 2 and I'm getting bored straight with it. My dad, on the other hand, is still enjoying the game.
