supernova_SU, was that a conquest victory?

Domination victory in 960ad.
Firaxis score 4995,
Jason score 10473.

I entered the MA in 490bc, Carthage has already been eliminated, I am at war with India, and the only other civ on the starting continent are the Celts. So far I have lost 4 boats to suicide crossings, and I haven't managed to find a crossing to other lands. I have no iron, no horses and no luxuries, and the only resource I have seen on the entire continent is an iron resource in the heart of the Celt lands.

At this point a swift Conquest or Domination victory seems out of the question as I won't be able to make a safe crossing (even if I find a crossing!!) until the end of the Middle Ages and either the tech of Navigation or Magnetism is finished. And when I am eventually able to safely cross the oceans I will at best have Med Inf / Longbow and the other civs could have Muskets, knights or even Cavalry, depending on their combined research.

So I decided to research as quickly as possible and head for a Diplomatic or Space victory. So my plan was to improve my research by libraries / universities in my core and as many scientists as possible from as many towns as I could settle on the continent. It would not be possible to trade for luxuries until Navigation or Magnetism is finished so I always needed to keep the lux slider at 20% /30%. To maximise research I had to keep my unit support as low as possible, so the wars with India and later the Celts were painfully slow. Fortunately India and the Celts, much like Carthage before them, were quite useless and put up very little resistance.

By the end of the MA I have destroyed India and the Celts are reduced to a single town. I have made contact with the remaining Civs who are a mile behind in techs. I have established a beachhead town on the principle Portuguese island ready for an invasion. And the discovery of Gunpowder showed I had no saltpetre.

As I enter the Industrial Ages I destroy the Celts triggering my GA with a victorious Legionary, and immediately declare war on Portugal for their resources. The completion of steam power, replaceable parts and refining showed we have no coal, rubber or oil. All resources needed to be conquered.

The AI proved to be very weak so I was able to destroy Portugal, then Germany and I just started on the Zulu when I achieved a Domination victory in 960ad.

Scratcher

100K victory in 1365 AD.
As I had lots of space, but not so much food (lots of jungle, plains and desert in that area), I decided not to go for the usual switch to Feudalism plus pop-rushing culture. With my slow-growing towns I would probably not be able to rush more buildings per turn than I was able to rush with cash. Also by the time I had finally cleared the jungle, my empire was already so large that I would definitely get 9 turns anarchy, losing to much culture. And the final point is: for pop-rushing one needs many luxuries, otherwise all towns will be reduced to one entertainer very quickly and will never regrow...
So I used a different approach for this game and built the Temple of Artemis and ICSed the entire continent except for my core. Then cash-rushing libraries and cathedrals plus building units in the core and disbanding them in the boondocks gave me a decent culture output. Also I harvested the forest on every tile to save some cash.

This approach blended in well with the lack of resources on our continent: Artemis gave some happiness and allowed cathedrals without having to build temples first. I also built the Sistine Chapel and was then able to run 10% lux despite having no luxury resources at all. Unfortunately the Oracle and the Hanging Gardens had been built on the other continent. (Didn't want to attack them as I was selling them techs for gpt.)

When Korea & Germany both had Theology, I disbanded Delhi, which had built the Great Library. I needed to avoid getting Education from the GLib, as that would invalidate my Artemis Temple. My plan was to get Education only after I had finished Cathedrals and Collosseums everywhere and had collected enough shields everywhere to replace the temples within 1-2 turns of the expiration of Artemis. But the game ended long before that point...

I conquered Portugal with a few Crusaders, just to get a bit more territory, and towards the end the Zulus landed a single Knight and sneak atteacked me with it, so I sent two Crusader-Armies to their continent for a retalliation action... (The separate parts were shiped by galley and then assembled in German territory to form size 4 Armies.) But the game ended, before I was able to do much damage. Took only one core city off of them.
