COTM 94 First Spoiler - Germany, the Ancient Age!

Reading Requirements
  1. You must be able to research a Middle Age technology.

Posting Restrictions
  • Please be discreet about AI locations; however, feel free to discuss contacts and trades.
  • No discussions of the middle ages (or later)
  • No screenshots of any middle-age (or later) resources.
  • Absolutely NO discussion of any other currently active 'X'OTM!

Not messing around - First spoiler is out right away! Tell us about your initial findings about your land mass, where you decided to settle, early technology research decisions, and how you got along with any other residents on your starting landmass. How did other contacts go? (No pictures beyond your starting landmass, please!) For Predator players, did the AI play a bit more aggressively?

Got screwed up by early barbarian pressure, wasn't prepared for it and lost worker early from bad rng. After horrible start just decided to have fun and aim towards 100k culture.

Proceeded towards monarchy, ICS and coastal blocking whole island (I know Vikings might mess me up). Haven't had problems with AI yet, but some tips on how to prevent them from gaining space race or something else before I gain enough culture are appreciated.

i played up to 1000bc even though my time will hardly permit me to finish the game.

predator, qsc stats:
37 pop, 1 settler, 16 workers
14 warriors, 1 archer, 5 curraghs
all 1st tier techs, Wri, Philo (but lost the race by 2 turns or so), HB and Myst
5 turns to CoL
193 gold
know 3 civs
2 grans, 2 rax

i moved the initial settler 2NE as proposed by Lanzelot and found that quite good. had 3 towns on distance-2, thus getting a full ring. have a wonder prebuild and a FP prebuild going.

Move Worker E and saw 2nd cow, settler follow. worker E again and found fresh water.
settled Berlin E E ES. Research to Philo. With 2 Cows i don´t need pottery now.

2nd town on the goldhill.
1 turn befor Philo i trade all AA Techs from Egypt, Russia, America and Zulu exept Lit, Cur, Const, CoL and Mona. New Town found Lit. Next turn i take the little sling and go in anarchy.
Another town found currency and i research CoL. 9t before Con i trade it from Egypt and enter the MA in 975bc.

Looks good but to many barbs and the map seems not good for a fast victory.

Since I am going to outside of competition anyway, I decided to post a few turns before reaching MA.

After buying Civ5 for the Xmas Holidays I realized it is just as dragging as Civ4 and put it away after a couple of days. But of course I came back here to see, if there was some advice (even that is surprisingly thin at C5), only to find that the GOTM for C3C is still alive. So after some back and forth (high difficulty, only 3 days until deadline) I decided to start it anyway and treat it as a training experience.

Next month I will play it for real.

I settled 2 ne which looked ok, but proved a pain when trying to set up rings, as all reasonable dist3 location where on bgs.

So instead I settle RCP 2,4,6 and hope that doesn't prove horrible in the midgame.

I researched Alpha on minimum but that was probably a wrong decision, as i was a couple of turns late for Philo. Also the currgahs took quite a while because of this and I was only making contacts once I reached Philo.

I was fortunately able to find to unconnected island with 2 civs each, so I hope there is a bit of tech trading potential in the future, also the india/zulu island is a bit ahead on the curve.

Barbs have been a minor hassle so far, but I fear the point, where somebody enters the MA, as I have at least 2 villages on the far reaches of my island.

Going for philo and not finding contacts until late meant a late start on granaries, which delayed the creation of Settler factories, but I still have about 15 cities up by now.

right now I am reseaching for CoL and hope zto trade iit for Monarchy which america, which then could be used to buy all the leftover techs from india/zulu. so with a bit of luck I am in MA myself in 6 turns.

Overall I thought about going for space victory which should be working quite well with a scietific civ.

One more question though, so ar I have not found iron, and I was wondering if its hidden under one of my cities, but i cant remember the keyboard shortcut for showing terrain only maps? Any help here would be appreciated.
