cpu overheating

i used to play civ2 on a p2 266mhz computer. for years i didn't have a problem with it. i recently bought a new computer. a compaq presario with windows xp installed on it. now, when i start the game, the cpu usage goes straight to 99%, the fan keeps turning on and off, and after several turns, the game starts to chug and freeze up. is civ2 compatible with windows xp? do i need a patch? help please

I can't believe no one has answered this yet... Anyway, there's a fix, and it's supposed to work (unfortunately not on my computer – I receive an unexpected shutdown-error). You can find the fix at Tim's Page.
