CTD and switched my civ

I've searched around and couldn't find any similar problem, sorry if I just missed it. I was playing as Germany and crashed to desktop. It was good timing as I needed to go grocery shopping anyhow. Odd thing is when I came back everything loaded fine except that now, no matter what save I load from the game, instead of Germany I'm playing Mongolia. I can move troops, zoom cities and even open all the advisor screens, but I can't talk to any other civs and I can't finish the turn. The game just sits there at "waiting for other civilizations" and it won't let me esc or otherwise bring up the main menu (have to load a completely unrelated game or alt-tab and end the process to get out of the game).

Anyone heard of this happening and is there anything I can do to salvage the game? I'm figuring I'm just screwed and going to have to start a new game, which sucks since I was a good 8 hours into it and it was the first time I was winning on monarch difficulty. And like I said I didn't see this problem addressed anywhere and search didn't have any good hits so sorry if this has been discussed.

If this wasn't so frustrating it would be very funny! >_<

edit: just for more info the game was the ice age one under senarios.

If your saves are autosaves, take the best two and copy them to the regular save folder. Then, start a new game. Then try to load your saves.

A crash to desktop is not going go into your save games and bork them all in the exact same way (causing Mongoloidism). Instead, some configuration for Civ 4 is probably broke, and starting a new game may fix it.

After like the 4th time reloading Civ4 completely with it converting my game to the mongols it finally loaded properly after trying hours later. Was very weird and only slightly funny >_<
