CTD's when playing Large size maps and bigger

My operating system is as follows:-

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600 2.90GHZ
Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2 of)
OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
Windows XP (SP3)

I've been told that the problem maybe because Civ4 doesn't handle Dual Core very well but thought i would ask on here before doing anything that may wreck my system.

I don't get any messages other than that the system has encountered a problem and has shut down the game. Very occaisionaly i get a Blue screen crash and the PC restarts.

The Error Signature is as follows.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing the problem?

it runs on dual core systems - though it will never use more than one core - the error message is a bit generic. Is there any more info in the event log?
