currency/question about gold

I wanted to see gold changed into something like dollars, euros, drachmas or whatever. Does anyone know how to do this? And maybe when you research Currency, you can choose a monetary unit to replace gold(this could be something changeable later in the UN, a vote where everyone has to have the same monetary unit.) What do other people think of this?

It would be reasonably simple to have the "gold" icon and text universally (from the beginning of the game) replaced by a "dollar" or "euro" icon and text.

But it would be very, very difficult to make it change at some point during the game, and even worse to give some sort of choice or have different players have different currencies. Maybe impossible.
