What does everyone think about customizable units in the modern era (or future era should it be included) kind of like it was available in Alpha Centauri?

The unit workshop was a bad idea in my opinion. At first I liked it but later I realized that I was building the same units nearly every game. Once this happened, I felt that it was wasting my time. I'm afraid that this would also happen if implmented in Civ4.

Agreed with WS: if you end up building units with the same stat combos anyways, what's the point? Sure, it can add a little variety, but after you get over the novelty of it, you'll just do the same thing every time you play. Fact is that units fit certain roles and a unit that is 4/1/2 defended by a 1/4/2 is far superior to having a 4/3/2 that is twice as expensive (or whatever). It's only when the AI can really give you a run for your money that more "generic" type units really pay off - attackers can serve as defenders and vice versa.

If they can be done well, they can be done well, and add an exciting element to the game. Bronze spears with wood shields and leather armor. Too bad you can't find any iron.
