Customizing Age

I am playing Civ II on the PC. When I start a new game and am customizing the world it gives me the choice of customizing the age to either 3 Billion, 4 Billion or 5 Billion years. But when I start it is always at 4000BC, why is that? What difference does make choosing 3 Billion over 5 Billion have? I don't get it.

If I'm right is just the age of earth. And that determines what kind of landtype you will play on (lot of grass or tundra etc.) or something like that.

Correct. The older age you pick, the more spread out the terreign features are. At 3 billion years, you get big clumps of trees, hills, and stuff. At 5 billion years, these items are more spread out. At least, that is what the manual says....

You always start at 4000BC....
