Customizing the difficulties

Greetings. I am interested in changing some of the settings of the difficulties, for example, I would like to maintain all of the Deity settings while making so the AI has no building and unit construction bonus, also where it would have less of a bonus against barbarians. How can I go about doing that?

I found a file in E:\Games\sid meier's civilization v\assets\Gameplay\XML\GameInfo named "Civ5HandicapInfos.xml" and I found all of the things I would have liked to change there. So i went to the according level of difficulty and I changed some values, however, when I started a Custom Game, I noticed none of my changes applied (i set myself to having a 20% bonus vs barbs and I only had 10 (was on Immortal and that is what I tweaked). Also the AI had all the crazy production/unit bonuses that I again, changed in the XML.

What am I missing? Do I have to modify another file as well for the changes to stick? Load the game in some other way? What do I need to do to make those changes "real"?

Thank you for your time and patience reading this post :)

Judging by what you've written, I'll make some assumptions.

First, I'll assume you're playing Gods & Kings and the reason your modifications aren't working is because you're not editting the "expansion's" file located at:

...\Sid Meier's Civilization V\assets\DLC\Expansion\Gameplay\XML\GameInfo

Next, I'll assume you're modifying the game by directly editting the game's files which is a bit of a no-no. It's safer and easier (once you get the hang of it) to modify the game using ModBuddy. But, it's up to you if you want to take the time to learn it.

(How'd I do? Was I two for two?)

Lol yeah, I was playing Gods and Kings, thanks a bunch. But for the slight AI bonus modifications I wouldn't think that it classifies as a major game change and it should work properly just with the XML modifications right?

One more question: if i play Gods and Kings over LAN and me and my lan buddy would have the same MODDIFIED gameinfo XML FILE, would our multiplayer game succumb to the settings we modified in our xml's?

Mods don't have to be major game changes. :)

Also, just make sure you backup your work then. I believe if a patch or hotfix is released which overwrites that file, your changes will be lost. Also, you're only retyping in values, but make sure you don't accidentally mistype anywhere else or do anything deeper because you could potentially break your game and it won't run. (Or worse, it will run and you won't notice the quirky behavior or oddities right away.) Though, I suppose Steam could fix it for you too if that happens.

As for the other question, I'm not sure; sorry. If I had to choose, I'd guess no.
