D&D - game or witchcraft?

Hey! It's the new year spirit!

Crusading Knights and Fighter Planes...what a team!

PS
Obviously you have all forgotten the dreaded 9th seal:
As the book of Enemus Aceus quotes:

Ancient before the Fifth Cataclysm, here
between the two rivers in Ur the ENEMY ACE™ waits!
And when the seal of the seventh city is broken,
then shall the ENEMY ACE™ in the catacombs of Ur awaken!

Forsaken (when His darksome splendorous glory eclipses it) burns the sun,
Enthrone (the eternally) benighted one, ENEMY ACE™, Usurper of the skies.
Named in (that black, shunned tome of ) forbidden lore,
Destined to rule (this telluric sphere and the myriad stars beyond) once more,
The ENEMY ACE™ shall arise!
Now, let the Gate yawn wide and the horrors of the Abyss engulf the earth, for the ENEMY ACE™ in the catacombs is risen!

I hope this puts the complete doom of the earth in pespective for you...

Ok good responses everyone. This was enjoyable to read and I got a lot of insight.

Let me say first of all, for the record, that I did not start this thread because I think DnD is witchcraft. I see nothing wrong with the game in itself, just with what some people do with it.

I read that article that as posted early in the thread about attacks on DnD by Focus on the Family and other conservative Christian people and organizations.

Let me also say that I am a born again Christian myself, rather conserative in belief.

Now I find nothing wrong with DnD. I have a little bit of experience with it. I can say that Christians who sit around and attack DnD and RPG in general do not understand the scriptures as well as they should before making such an attack. A group of guys sitting around playing an RPG will not open a gate to hell or summon demons. The incantations they may recite are probably made up, unless they consult demonic material that does not relate to the game. Anyway, if demonic activity results, it is because of the Devil himself, not because of the game. Now if the game represents a stumbling block to someone, that is it gets in the way of their relationship with God, then they should get it out of their life. This goes with anything from TV to money to drugs and alcohol. But there is nothing wrong with playing RPGs for fun and entertainment. I think people who attack it know very little about it. No doubt there are people who play RPGs and have gotten into satanism, but the two are not directly related, and a large number of people are into satanism who have nothing to do with RPGs. So that is my conclusion. Thanks everyone for all the input.

Dungeons and Dragons....is it just a game or is it more (evil, witchcraft, of the devil, etc) Please shed light on this for me.
Looks like you need a lot of light here october...

First of all, you are seeming to equate evil, witchcraft and (I presume you mean) devil worship. If so, you are profoundly misguided.

Devil worship is inextricably linked with Christianity. In fact it could not exist without Christianity. It has nothing to do with witchcraft as such.

Witchcraft is a very broad term. I know very many people who practise witchcraft. Very few of them are evil by my standards. Not one of them could be classed as a devil worshipper, again by my standards.

In my experience, D&D has no particular connection with evil, nor does it seem particularly to encourage evil. And I know people of many religions who play D&D, including Christians, those who follow one of the many pagan religions, and those who would classify themselves as witches.

Obviously you will find idiots and evil people who play D&D. But I can show idiotic evil Christians too!

Stormerne,

Please read my post that was right above yours. That states my conclusions about DnD.

-october- :)

Hi October,

I hope some of the posts shed some light on things for you.

It would be fair to say that any magic in the RPG systems is usually made up and
Part of the story or plot within the game…harmless.

Also it is a fact that the mythos of “demons” and the “devil” is part of the mythology of the Christians, as Stormerne said,
to believe in one you must believe in the other…

Witchcraft and the wiccan way of life is separate from this altogether.

It is a common misconception that these ideas get mixed up…

But there are some great books and material out there you should read, October!

I don’t know what book shops you have in your area, but there should be some cool fantasy books there that will inspire you…good luck!

"I remember a guy that played Warhammer. I think his name was.....Stellar Converter."

oh, is that so, paley. well isnt that odd. i dont know anybody who goes by that name here anymore.:D;)(didnt thunder say to not talk about me???! shh!)

oh, no offense ment, curty-boy, i was merely saying that lord of the rings and the silmarillion and all of his other books have more parallels with christianity than you can shake a bible at.

i think, what october is trying to say about witches, is maby what the puritans thought 'witches' were. in some contexts, witches and devil worship go hand and hand.

"What's your problem, Glaurung?

As you may have noticed from my previous posts, I cannot abide religion.
But I wasn't having a dig at religion or the great man (JRR Tolkien).

I was merely stating that there are some references in Lotr and I am aware of the silmarillion, thank you very much. "

i have no 'problem'.

no, as a matter of fact, i didnt notice that from your original posts.

i know it all too well that you were not having a 'dig', if you will, at religion or mr. tolkien.

what do you mean 'references'? parallels, maybe, but no 'references'.

And again a prove to my opinion that organizes religions in some cases do lead to disrespect, intolerance and in extreme cases to war. Conclusion: badly managed organized religion is the true evil for mankind.

Nice internet links by the way.

Glaurung,

Since I make no attack on anyone (except nazis) and have merely
made my opinions, I fail to see what your argument is...Either you are an outraged nazi (which I doubt) or just bored....

You seem to be precipitating a conflict based on nothing at all...

What is your point, my fellow Warhammer enthusiast?

I think we are actually in agreement,
and have just worded things differently!

Please let me remind the people here that although I am a Christian, one of the major organized religions, I was in no way attacking DnD. I just wanted to see where the debate stood. I think there is no problem with DnD personally. I think there is no problem with anything that doesn't stand in teh way of God unless it is forbidden in the Bible. Witchcraft is forbidden in the Bible, but DnD is not witchcraft. It's just a game. Witchcraft is not actually practiced when on is playing DnD.

Ha ha ha ha ha...........
It's been a while since I have last laughed as much as I did while reading that essay!!!!!!

People only say stuff like that because the find RPG as easy targets for they own frustration and because they need somebody to blame for things like the lose of a son.

But hey - who really cares what other people thing - it's not like we live in the dark middle ages :king: anymore - right??

:sniper:

BTW Hamlet - nice to see other Danes at CFC - there are far to few of us..........

Someone should point out the possible demonic overtones in Civilization to those deriding D&D. That way they could attack us directly and engender an even bigger laugh.

Suicide by D & D may be bad for society, but it pales in comparison to the danger of me founding a civilization and taking over the world. Think what would happen then. I mean come on, the game promotes the casual use of nuclear weapons. Whole armies are destroyed and cities raized without any thought to the human tradgedy and suffering. This can only lead to the desensitization of our young and the production of a power hungry group of people bent on world conquest. These people are even against oxygen!!!

(Sorry, I got a little carried away there. Won't happen again until it does)

Yes, I can see the headlines and the articles now:

POLICE yesterday arrested a man in his 20s for allegedly conspiring to plant a nuclear device in the American capital of Washington DC. The man was reported to have screamed out as he was being dragged into a squad car that he had to do this, or otherwise a space ship would land on Alpha Centauri next year, and besides, he was a fundamentalist, so the international penalties would not be as severe.
It is reported that the as yet unnamed individual was caught as a result of advertising his nefarious plans on an internet site, specifically the Civ2 Strategy and Tips forum on Civfanatics.com. Law enforcement officials are seeking those involved with the site in order to capture the other conspirators, who seem to include a fighter pilot, a hippo and a depressed former kami-san"

:)

That would be bad, but think of this

CONCLUSIVE RESULTS from a study conducted by the CPSCG ( Centre for the Persecution of Satanic Computer Games) have proved that playing in, looking at, or even thinking about the game Civilization II will irrevocably lead to black magic, ritual sacrifice, homosexuality, bisexuality, transvetitism [sic], voyeurism, semitism, communism, necrophilia, sadism, masochism, domination, marxism, darwinism, child pornography...flag burning, fetishism, atheism, islam...demonology, necromancy, jewishness, bondage, spiritism, fascism, anal sex, neo-nazism, ritual cannibalism, occultism, pagan religions, sorcery, sin, arson...satanism, witchcraft, shamanism, incest, adultery and sodomy, feminism, also they drink human blood, listen to heavy metal and rock music, promotion of evolution theory instead of creationism, using hard drugs and trying to summon real demons...All of these victims eventually commit suicide or live rest of their lives in a mental hospital. Satan has taken their soul and they will burn in HELL for eternity!"

;) :D :p

they will burn in HELL for eternity!"

Does this mean I can stop worrying about what the future holds?

Also, Sadism isn't so bad. I mean, compared to masochism it is great. I'd rather be holding the whip than being whipped.

Civilzation play leads to:

Exploding, reloading, voyeurism, wearing uniforms, communism, strafing, sadism, carpet bombing, domination, off-topic fixation, marxism, darwinism, dog-owning...city burning, nuclear warfare, fetishism, atheism, mortar artillery, islam...demonology, necromancy, forum-obsession, dribbling, bondage, spiritism, fascism, mobile warfare, doomism, ritual cannibalism, mysticism, thaumaturgism, occultism, pagan religions, sorcery, over-eating, owning sniper rifles and battle tanks, arson...saidonnism, witchcraft, shamanism, shamenism, stupidity, plutarchism and sodom, feminism, also players might drink human blood, listen to techno and rock music, beleive evolution theory instead of creationism, use cough medicine and try to get to sleep!

Little wonder CIV is so popular!

And that explains why Sid looks so unhealthy!

I never condemned anyone that played DnD. I can't figure out of people are mocking me or not...I hope not. I like the game. Oh well...enough on that topic. This was a good discussion.

I can tell you that Civilization playing leads to the following things: loss of sleep, hunger, dirty dish buildup in the vicinity of your computer, lateness to work, poor family communication, long strategy discussions with co-workers (co-civ players), etc.

This game rocks. So does Starcraft, Rogue Spear, Age of Empires, Baldurs Gate II, etc.

And I thought I'd ever get into computer games. This all started when my friend a couple years ago introduced me to CivII!!!!!

Rock on everyone!
