I mean look at him, financial + organized are 2 of the best traits in the game. Guaranteed economy for a ancient era REX strategy and an uber UU, very good against the AI archers at the higher difficulty levels. Great for pillaging the critical bronze/iron/horse resources as well.

You need the horse tough =) So first search for Animal Husbandry and if no horse is around, you must switch to bronzeworking/ironworking tech tree.

well stupidly simple strategy, but the hero and the UU just add up so nicely.

I like him too. I'm a builder who likes a nice early war or two. He fits well with that.

It just depends on the type of game. He's great for the strategy you described- an early rush followed by lots of building. He's not so good for pure warmongering, and he can't expand very fast without an early war.

Playing him on a crowded map with a lot of warlike neighbors would be extremely difficult.

I drew Darius a few games back on Random Leader, and I was very pleased how the game played out. Starting on one of the smaller landmasses meant that my Immortals only saw nominal action, but Darius's traits did make for a noticeably smoother cruise to an early spaceship win.

The hard part for Darius is to expand early. Once you have 8-10 cities, you can support enough military to keep your advance further, because with other civilizations the limit to your expansion is mainly economical, while with Daris the limits to rexing become the military power.

Also, the Immortals have big trouble defeating spearman, so you must be quick in expanding. Well they can pillage the copper quickly so the problem is solved quickly, but the killing the already produced Spearman is tough.
