Hey there everyone,

Well, I'm trying to play Civ III but it keeps giving me this blasted data2.cab error.

Here is the full error message:

Component transfer error

Component: Program Files
File Group: Program Files
File: D:\data2.cab
Error: Incorrect function

It sometimes also says "cyclic redundancy check" in place of "incorrect function" I'm at a loss. My CD is from Best Buy (when it was first released though, so it's like 5 yrs old, but it's in good condition). I've installed it before and it worked just fine, the only thing that changed is I have a new hard drive (My old Maxtor got the 'click of death' and rolled over) so I obviously had to reformat and install windows again (I run on win2k) but that went smoothly.

Has anyone had this error before? If so I would be very grateful if you could tell me how to fix it. The only other thing I can think to tell you is it dies on this file consistantly:

Civilization III\Sounds\Diplomusic\DipASEarlyWar.mp3

I don't know if that holds any significance, but this problem is driving me nuts. Any info on this problem would be great.

my best,
Gunther

Well, I've tried this already but to no avail.(I did the old tooth-paste trick and ran it under a tap then dried it with my T-shirt) My CD has only very minor scratches, I don't see this as being the problem. Could you think of any other solutions?

No. Well, you could try copying the cd to a temp folder and installing it from there. But I've never done that, so I'm not sure how it would work.

good idea, I'm working on it right now. I've got another idea I saw suggested, it's a program called "Virtual CD" one guy said it solved his problem which was similar to my own. It takes all the files and makes a virtual CD of it, hopefully I can just make a temp folder and install it from there, if not I would speculate that will be my next move.

*sigh* in the short time it took me to make this post it's already given me an error... I'm going to try a bit longer copying the files to the temp folder.

Crap... my data2.cab file is corrupted I'm pretty sure, it won't even load into the temp folder. I don't think I can install Civ III at all unless I were to find a replacement file. So that shoots down my virtual CD idea as well... I don't suppose you would know where I could find a data2.cab file would you?

Well, if it's just Civ3 you're trying to install, walmart has it for about $10. Complete is about $20, but I don't think wallyworld carries that any more.

As for anyone sending you the data2.cab file via this forum, it's not going to happen. This site views the uploading of files to be piracy, even when it's helping a legitimate user. We're kinda strict about that.

On the one hand I get what you're saying and I can understand that civfanatics.com wants to keep things nice between the makers of civIII and themselves; but on the other hand it really annoys me that I'll have to pay for the same game twice when it's only one file that I need.

Well unfortunately things are literally where I can't spend $10 on something like a game... so I guess I'm just a wee bit screwed for now. Well, I've got lots of other games I've accumulated, so I'm not going to suffer by any means.

Thanks for your help though, you seemed most sincere. Maybe I'll poke around the forums a little while and see what's happening. (Hey, I've still got Civ I and Civ II)

I understand your frustration. I've been there twice myself. My first Civ3 disc was cracked, and so civ was unplayable for me for a while. And I lost my PTW disc, too.

Hopefully it works out for you soon.

I have the same problem. I had Civ3 installed and C3C installed. the 1.22 patch won't read disc bug screwed it up, so I uninstalled it. Now, Installing C3C auto-installs PTW 1.27f, which was uninstalled along with C3C. After all was said and done, I decided to install PTW first to get the unit packs and the editor (which didn't come with C3C's auto-install). Now, I tried to install it three times, and each time, around 65%, the same thing happpens. However, unlike you, it doesn't always stop on the same file :hmm:
EDIT: scratch that, it was just because of some dirt on the disc! It installed just fine now. :)
EDIT2: But No Matter what I do, something Bugged civ3 so I can't play it whilst C3C is installed...

LOL, are you kidding me?? Sending ONE little file is not piracy! What the hell is wrong with you. Thats like saying listening to a clip of music, or watch a part of a movie online is piracy. Its only piracy if your handing over all the files that would be needed to play the game, listen to the song, or watch the entire movie....IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY is what should not be allowed on this site!

I suggest you read the [rules]forum rules[/rules], which clearly explain CFC's stance on Piracy. We have a zero tolerance policy on Piracy. There's also the bit about agreeing not to post copyrighted material unless you own said copyright. Posting of a file, even a single file, is against those rules.

If you have a problem with it, take it up with Thunderfall.
