When I get involved in an early war with a neighbor my score plummets dramatically compared to the other Civs.

It gets old.

1) Conquer neighbor
2) Use his resources
3) Profit

warmonger penalty will strike only your relations with those few civs you have already met ;)

While Gamewizard is right that score in of itself is generally irrelevant in the realities of the actual situation it can be a general indicator of each civs standing and early wars can drain not only your score.
As a rule of thumb i try to avoid early wars that will be protracted and won't be over quickly as in the early game you will be investing a proportionally large amount of your resources in that war which will detract from your general empire building and on higher levels in particular where your playing significant catch up from the start due to the AI bonuses an early war which interferes with your start strategy can easily make you fall even further behind.

Krajzen's is very valid in what he says but it is not always that simple, terrain often being the biggest factor. If your target is surrounded by lots of hills, jungle or forest you can expect heavy losses to achieve your goal which means you will need to build a lot more units which is a lot more hammers spent, a lot more hammers not used on building important building early to catch up, more gold spent on unit upkeep and probably less science in the long run as your growing your cities properly to gain said resources.

If you can quickly grab an enemy city without too much extra military effort then an early war and capture can be greatly beneficial if not then it can easily just become a drain and distraction so if you are the instigator don't start the war in the first place, if you are the victim the best way is usually just to find a nice defensive position to chew up their invading force then either move close to one of their cities which means they will generally offer peace or just stay at war farming their units for xp to give yourself a small but strong army.

I'm not sure. Something about OP's description tells me he was referring to wars in which the other side was the aggressor (because he calls it a "curse", and besides, if early wars are such a problem, then just don't start them.)

Score really is irrelevant, especially in the early game where AI advantages pull it up, you can always overtake them later. So much of the score comes from things like wonders and religion, that it really is not very important.

If it is a defensive war (i.e. one not initiated by you), then I don't see why it should be pushing your score down unless you were really losing. Just defend, don't go on the offensive. It's going on the offensive that pushes your score down as you need a larger army to attack. If you only intend to defend, then the only units you need to use are the defensive units that you would have built anyway, even if there hadn't been a war.

If anyone's score is going to be plummeting, it's your opponent's. He's the one wasting resources on units that get killed by you. Just as long as you make sure he doesn't pillage any tiles. And you get XP out of the war, too.
