For Deity mode, any thoughts, other than play Darius.
Feel free to fire strategies at me. I usually play on huge maps, and open with the great wall.

Any leader is ok. Game can become difficult on some starts. Don't know about building GW, chance to miss it is substantial on deity. Huge maps with more civs tend to make things simpler as there are more trade/manipulation opportunities. Chance you'll get declared on is somewhat bigger too of course.

Look up some recent challenges, Duckweed warmonger thread being the latest.

Because that is the easiest way to start deity amirite :king:

Ways to make Deity easier:

Play a Civ with a strong unit (Inca, Persia, Sumeria, Egypt, Rome).
Play on a slower speed (Epic, Marathon) so your unit has a longer life.
Play on a crowded map so the AI can't get too big, and don't waste hammers on Great Wall.

One could argue that when one plays an "unwinnable" scenario they learn more than if they play an easily winnable scenario.

In trying to make the leap to Immortal I played a handful of Deity games, and found myself winning them once in a while (between 5 and 10%.) However, using what I learned from the Deity games it gave me a better chance to win on Emperor and Immortal. Since there is currently no difficulty above Deity, playing a "hard" Deity game can be a great way to learn how to handle "normal" Deity games.

Let someone else do your dirty work for you. AIs still suck at warfare, and you can sometimes clean up with units 2 ages out of date if someone else did most of the dirty work for you.
Manage diplomacy closely, check for trade opportunities; often enough you can make someone else's success yours.

A little anecdote that might be relevant: When I reverted to Emperor for a breather after a few nailbiting Deity games, I didn't enjoy the less stressful gameplay. Instead, I had a stereotypical Evil Overlord reaction... 'I'm surrounded by imbeciles! Must I do everything myself?!'
