The only pantheon selected is god of war. I have the second pantheon should I pick Desert Folklore (I'm working the tiles that would benefit now but ultimately there is only going to be 6-7 tiles in my empire that will benefit from it) or get tears of the gods (later my third city is going to have three pearls in addition to my three in the capital), I am beelining Petra and crossing fingers on this one. I did get lucky and popped sailing in a ruin.

Pearls are not tiles you'd work right away, whereas flood plains are. DF is great for early religion, whereas if you work those pearls you will get lower food, hampering growth. I would pick DF

Desert Folklore, definitely. Both should work great, but you've got a lot of desert there, and you won't be working those pearls for a while.

Why would there only be 6 - 7 tiles that would benefit from desert folklore? You've got 8 good desert tiles around your cap already (9 if you get Petra and that last flat desert becomes a good tile), and it looks like the desert upriver of your capital could be a good settling spot as well, mountain-adjacent with good food and hammers.

I'd go Desert Folklore, it'll help you found a religion faster.

there are 5 tiles you are gonna work all the time (flood plains x 3, sheep and oasis) + 3 hills. And I imagine that you will settle a city around the silk to the south, so that desert wheat will be giving faith as well, so yeah ... DF seems to be clear winner most of the time especially when there are a lot of flooded plains.

I would skip the Petra altogether, its not a great Petra start and you sacrifice other stuff to beeline it. Especially since you settled the flat instead of the sheep your early production will suck so it will take forever to build.

You have 3 river hills and the sheep, Petra is not worth it unless you have >5 river hills imo.

why settle here ? that my biggest question seeing the SS.
you could have a costal + river + hill + moutain start.

for you question DF.

i sent my warrior north and saw the marble and wanted it to be in the 4th ring.

Ended up not getting Petra so I retired on turn 72

DF mostly because you'd have to cripple growth for tears.

If you wanted to go tears for faster beliefs picks, you would've needed to beeline and build lighthouse asap

Clearly desert faith; I'm counting a lot more nearby flood plains / desert+hill tiles than Pearls.

Now if that was a plains or grassland start with the Pearls instead of Desert, I'd have taken Tears of the Gods.

I count 8 faith/desert tiles, that's pretty good. However, I would have settled Rio on the hill/river/coast tile next to the mountain. You would have gained more desert tiles and swap Ivory for Spice. You would lose one pearl but gain an Observatory.

I had a similar choice in an earlier game - a desert city but with three Gems instead of Pearls. It was a no-brainer to pick Tears of God since they would be worked early on.

I would have settled there too if I knew that I'd still have access to the Coast and the other Luxuries. The southern most pearls wasn't visible and I didn't send my warrior south. I should have and in most cases I take a minute to look at my start; here I didn't do that and probably could have ascertained that that spot would give me access.

My next game I got a proper jungle start so I'll get to play with the Brazilwood camps. Also here's a screen shot from turn 55 notice any thing interesting about Babylon?

Agreed with the city spot; it does appear much better to found there. And he'll want to found a coastal city in the north anyway, and it will take in the Pearl that the capital won't.

And yes, very good point that large quantities of Gems is a better Tear of the Gods site than large quantities of Pearls.
