I followed the provided instructions.... copied the mods folder to mods and the assets folder to assets

nothing changed when I loaded the mod though

Your wording makes me suspect something. Did you copy the Mods folder into Beyond the Sword\Mods and the Assets folder into Beyond the Sword\Assets, or did you copy them both into Beyond the Sword\ and allow them to merge with the files in Beyond the Sword\Mods and Beyond the Sword\Assets?

If you did the former, you need to go back and do the latter.

Also, did you install to the My Games or the Program Files directory?
