If you have enough money, Barbarians will sometimes offer to leave one of your cities alone if you pay them. Also, if your capital is captured, you may be given the chance to save the government by moving your palace to another city INSTANTLY, and avoid a civil war.

I think a lot of people on This board already knew that.By the way ,don't pay barb ,kill leaders for gold and prederably buy the soldiers.
Same with capitol ,don't let it be captured ,capture theirs , especcialy in the begining it's a major setback for them. (and it could have wonders)
a lot of capitals or wonder city's are next to the sea and can easily be captured with a small amphibous assualt.but still better ,you can build all wonders yourself.

Actually, you don't need to have very much gold. If this is inevitable, I will rushbuy everything in all my cities to reduce the demand the barbarians make. Of course, then they sometimes just march in anyway...

Sometimes it's good to let the barbarians take your city. For instance, when I just had built a city, some barbarians came. They took my newbuilt city (it wasn't detroyed!), and luckily for me I had just built a diplomat, so I went to the city and bought it back for about 36g. For this I got the city back AND the archer and the diplomat in the city. So I gained an archer!
