I couldn't resist searching CFC for diety and found 1142 occurences. Deity occurs 2639 times. This (mis)leads me to a poll. :p

'i' before 'e' except after 'c' or when it sounds like 'weigh.'

It took me three times through to realize you didn't just write the same thing twice ....

Same here.
I thought about a multiplayer game or such...

Poll result (except for "abstain") fits to search result so far.

1142+2639 occurrences... well, no wonder the server keeps giving me that error that it's busy!

Actually, both spellings are wrong. After a long hard day of hacking your way through the jungle, you'll go through enough insect repellent that you'll be very DEET-y indeed.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I guess it's funnier if you've ever done summer fieldwork in Alaska.

I must admit I am guilty of misspelling deity on several of my previous posts. I figured out the error of my ways a few weeks ago and briefly entertained thoughts of going through all my posts and correcting them. After a few beers, I left things the way they were.

I must admit I find it annoying how many people mis-spell 'Deity'. Admittedly it is one of the exceptions to the 'i-before-e-except-after-c' idiom.

However, I do get tempted to ask people who say they play 'Diety' if that's like a really difficult diet or something :)

An additional question: the landmass forms in CivIII are Archipelago, Continents, and ___. Who can spell ___ without looking it up? :)

Oh man, that brings back memorys
Skeeters are the Alaskan state bird. I was stationed at Elemendorf AFB for 2 years outside of Anchorage. I have seen the 'skeeters' so thick you could clap your hands together and kill 20 or more. That's not an exaggeration either.

Matt
Wishing he was back in Alaska, 'skeeters' be damned.

Edit: @ Sirp
Pangaea. No I didn't look it up.

Funnily enough, I can spell Pangea fine, it's Archipelago I have to think twice about. ;)

It's Pangaea right?

Other words I see misspelled a lot:
Cavalry spelled as Calvary
Siege spelled as Seige
Rapist spelled as Raper

Spelling's never been my strong point! :crazyeye:

Have problems with these too

Now I'm going back to playing my game on Diety eating my Salad Deit :p

my spelling is sobad ive had to put a note at the bottom of my sig cause people were reading the dribble i wrote, not making any sence and movign on......
but i spell it deity, pangaea and Archipilago.
2 out of 3 aint bad.

For that 'a' word that means lots of little continents, I always put "islands" instead.

I really don't care about "deity" and "diety" because people know what I'm talking about - if I ever have written it.

I always thought "diety" was an attempt to be funny. I couln't believe so many posters would make that mistake involuntarily. Strange that a single (and important word, at least for civ) can get misspelled so often.

(just like all those "nucular" spellers)

Yeah although Deity seems to trick lots of people, Pangaea is worse. More people spell it incorrectly than correctly!

pangaea (correct) gets 338 results, while pangea (incorrect) gets 686 results.

It's one very hard word to spell.

Next question: what does the 'Pangaea' mean? :)

Pangaea, n. The geological concept that all the world's land mass was at one time combined into one continent. This last occurred approximately 400 million years ago. From Greek pan, "all" and Greek geos, "world."
Webster's Desk Reference Dictionary

Next question?:grad:

its a 'super continant' that is basically the only landmass, or the vast majority of the landmass. its how early dinos and other things seemed to be spead all over the world. but in civ terms its just 1 big continant and maybe a few smaller islands.

Crap. I just noticed that Deity is an exception to the rule I quoted. You learn something every day!
