Differing age units - combat question

I was wondering, do differing age units gain combat bonuses against lower age units?

I ask this because in my current game playing the French the Germans invaded my territory with Settler/Spearmen combo's one too many times and I declared war. They had Archers and Spearmen (Ancient units) only...

Anyway I was finding that my Medieval Infantry and Knights weren't fairing too well against their Spearmen even though its 4 to 2 however my Musketmen were easily defeating the Spearmen despite it being only 3 to 2.

Given that Musketeers are higher up the tech tree than Knights and Medieval Infantry would they get bonuses against lower tech units?

Or was I just lucky?

There are no era-related bonuses in Civ.

There have been reliable tests done of the Random Number Generator (RNG) and they show that it is good at producing random numbers.

Note that the randomness factor can play a huge part in battles, and sometimes you do get runs of good/bad luck.

I guess I was just lucky (or unlucky with my Knights ). This game has such a pedigree I wouldnt be suprised if there were undocumented features in it just to keep the experts on their toes...

I would say that your musketmen are doing better than your knights because they enjoy the Fortification and Defender combat bonuses. A fortified defender never receives less than 35% bonus and an unfortified defender never receives less than 10%.

try not to think of the advancement of ages as a bonus. Many factors determine whether you get the upper hand regardless of what unit you have. A veteran spearmen guarding a city will destroy a tank or modern weapon many times.

if you want bonuses try attacking enemy city or units from a hilltop or mountain top.

Oh right, I didnt know about the height advantage thingy. I'll try that one next time. As for Veteran Spearmen defending against Tanks - I think thats just a bit dumb really

There is no offensive height advantage.

Only the defender gets a terrain bonus.
