I have hard copy of the Civ 4 patched up to 1.74; I got Warlords off of Direct 2 Drive; then downloaded BTS off D2D as well, but that setup could not update Warlords in order to install; so I downloaded the patch off the D2D site. After running that setup, the program crashes shortly after it detects my Civ 4 1.74, and the message reads "Patch installation failed! Aborting installation." Any ideas?

Contact D2D's customer support, and they will help you find out why you cannot patch your game.

Direct 2 Drive expansions won't work with the retail copy. Just as the a retail expansions won't work with the direct 2 drive original.

This is incorrect. Warlords and Beyond the Sword from D2D fully work with all retail/D2D combinations. The retail expansions are also compatible, but only after you patch your D2D games to the most up to date version.

Why then whenever I tried to patch with the retail patch distributed via the multiplayer portal I got the message "no version of Sid Meyers Civ detected"?

Installing/playing the expansions and updating the games via the Multiplayer interface are two completely separate issues.

All of the D2D Civ4s are fully compatible to install and play with retail copies.

If you want to update your D2D purchased Civ4 games, you must download the patch from D2D and not from 2K or the multiplayer interface.
