Let's assume that you select Multiplayer -> Internet when you are not connected to the net. Connecting to Gamespay will fail of course, but if you connect to the Internet after that and enter an IP in "Direct IP" can you play a game ?

I guess the same question would apply to the case where Gamespy server is down.

My friend who lives about 2 miles away and I play direct IP. Gamespy is laggy even at 2 miles! So we connect direct IP and sometimes it seems as fast as when I take my computer to his house and we connect back to back.

i never tried it. wondering if it is faster than by joining a normal game room ? also wondering will u be able to host via direct IP even if u behind a router ? :p

sickgamer, hosting behind a router should work just fine provided you open the relevant ports.

What I don't understand is the difference between direct IP and gamespy when playing the game. As far as I can tell gamespy is simply a lobby system. When someone hosts a game and others join, they lookup that person's IP and connect directly to that person. At least that's how it works in other online games I've tried. Seems to me gamespy is nothing more than an irc based setup, or something very similar.
