Finally got the game (yay!) and it doesn't run too baddly, tho does seem to get more sluggish as things progress.
i've been trying to play multiplayer lan with a friend who's also got the game, but have had a few problems, and one game breaker.
to start with the loading of the multiplayer game seems very slow, like, 5 minutes. given that the save games arn't that huge this seems a little excessive - even the bit where it's transfering the files seems slower than it should be, leading me to suspect that i've broken something somewhere and it's capping my lan at adsl rates or something (dunno if that's even possible, but hey ho).
anyway, i get in to the game, it runs fine for a while, and then someone starts diplomacy with me. the diplomacy takes *that* long to 'load' that we loose communications between the two computers, and have to wait while i/my friend quits and rejoins (why doesn't the game send keepalive while it's loading stuff? this seems a horrific oversight).
i've tried unpacking the graphics using the tool found in other threads on here, but that's not helped. i suspect that the problem is my hard drive's speed. despite being 7200 rpm it makes glaciers look speedy (no idea why). i've also been to windows update and downloaded the latest drivers for everything.
my suspicion is that it's taking ages and ages to load the animated person in the diplomacy screen, so i'd really like to try disabling them, either by replacing them by a static image or by having an empty box. given the modability of the game i'm assuming this is possible, but i've had a look through the ini file and some likely sounding xml files with no luck finding it.
alternativly, the game's windowing system seems very sluggish. it takes ages to open new windows sometimes, particularly the military adviser, whom can take upwards of several minutes.
my system:
acer aspire 1520 laptop:
athlon 64 3400
512mb ram (1gb more in the mail, hoping that'll help)
nvidia FX5700 go graphics 64mb (running version 6.14.10.6212 drivers, which are the latest version available from acer - anyone who knows where i can get later GeForce GO drivers from would also be most happy making, real shame they're not in the detonater packs).
all help greatfully received.
thanks.
