I've not been playing too long but have managed to get a cultural victory and a science victory on prince setting but was somewhat disappointed with the "victory sequence" especially for the science one where the actual take off of the spaceship was obliterated by the victory window. Might have been nice to have had a small video to end it......or should there have been and my game didn't show it ?

It costs easily 10-30k to make a CG cinematic for a few minutes. Unless they get it done by interns for free.

This is also why wonder movies weren't practical. But I also quite like the painting splash and the dramatic readings for the wonders.

I'm ok with there being no victory sequence if it means they can keep a programmer on to work on the game patching it bi-monthly like they have been for a year or two. until the expansion comes out.

That said I kind of agree that they should do something special for victories. A few more splash screens with beautiful paintings would be nice.

Personally, I prefer the splash screen with beautiful art and nice voice-over instead of subpar animations.

Though the text for the Domination victory and Cultural victory both could have been much better. The text for Science victory is good.

I just want the end of game replays back. And whoever said that they cost to much how come the could aford them for civ 4 kind of throws out your argument, they rushed this game out and this is one area where they failed.

Cman, aren't the end game replays already there? Just go to the chart setting, I remember seeing something similiar to Civ4's replays there.

End game replays ARE back. When's the last time you played?

also Civ4 CG look pretty awful and wouldn't fit the aesthetic of the game. Also they didn't add anything or gave you a flavour of the wonder.

Civ5 wonder splash with speech > Civ4 animation.

Personally my favorite wonder movies were from Civ 2. Since they were mostly just video or cheap art scenes with music I don't see how this would be cost prohibitive. Given the number of wonders in Civ 2 I know it wasn't 20-30k per video.

Yeah those were nice and super cool for its time, but their production values and likely the source videos are really old now. And were mostl public domain.

Civ2 had a very edutaiment feel to them. I think they've been moving away from that more towards 4x

As for the cost of the video, it's the cost of doing CG basically. Hiring staff do plan out scenes and it probably takes 2-4 weeks to do one from storyboards to final. Imagine doing it for all the wonders.

Just doing the 4 victory conditions would easily take a team 8 to 16 weeks. or 2 to 4 months.

Personally, I prefer the simple art panels in Civ V. You'll generally be seeing them a lot, and after a handful of victories videos tend to get old. Same with the wonders; I like the panels of art and a quote better than watching a video I've seen a million times over. I already have to watch practically the entire Civ V opening before the game finishes loading on my computer. :( (At least it was very well done, but it still gets old.) I will agree, however, that the spaceship should take off from the capital and then the panel should come up.

As for Civ2's movies, I have to agree with dexters. They weren't bad for their time, but they have a very heavy edutainment feel to them. They also scream the ninties from the highest mountain at the top of their lungs.

The only Civ clip I was particularly partial to was the science victory one in CivIII with the spaceship taking off and then the visual comparison to the dandelion.

It can easily take 2-4 months just to do a single video. I wouldn't be surprised if the opening video for Civ V took half a year or more.

Does everyone really let the cinematic videos turned on, on Civilization 4, after months of playing?
I believe videos get really tiring after watching them a couple of times, while still images retain their value.

Well what a sorry sad state of affairs our World is in now then. They cannot afford to make movies anymore because they are 10-30k a pop.

Another example of moving backwards. Maybe it's time we seriously considered pushing that red button now.

It's just how things have scaled.

Probably cost them more money to do the intro CG than it cost MicroProse to develop all of Civ2 in the early 90s.

The complexity is way up. So 'bells and whistles' have to be traded off in 4x games like Civ with a limited audience and appeal. As a strategy game, I'd rather them focus their budgets on improving the game.

Big releases could be done in small teams of under 15 people just 20 years ago, now it takes hundreds. And then you have the Call of Doody / WoW effect to budgets, where one game can bring in billions, and literally suck the air out of everything around them. So yea, if you're a studio aiming for the next billion dollar game, it's worth your time to spend 100 - 200 million on development.

Civ is never going to get that big.

Yeah, it's just a poor show when as things get newer they seem to get a whole lot worse. Not just computer games but everything - cars, comedy, films, cartoons etc. It applies across the board. It's like we reached a pinaccle ten years ago and everything that comes after is just sub standard.

I am willing to bet Diablo III blows Diablo II away.

I liked the MS Encarta style edutainment videos both in Civ II and Alpha Centauri. I actually watched most of them every time. Civ II was a lot faster though so you didn't spend a lot time waiting between turns. It was nice to take a break and watch a 30 second clip. The voice clips added a lot to the charate

I also liked the victory movies but just an opinion. The fact that after winning you can click and be back at the new game screen in 2 seconds is anti-climatic. Almost depressing to spend all that time and then get back to square 1 with no movie or credits or cool theme song. Never really got old for me. Even coming from Civ 1 through Alpha Centauri and the rest of the Civs.

Whilst having something more at the end of the game would be nice, I can't say it really bothers me all that much. The artwork is quite nice, even if not moving. :dunno:

They can zoom it in and pan the image ;)
