Are you better off leaving your adepts alone and not promoting them in order to get faster XP (and then in one turn upgrade them to archmage/summoner)? Or is there no difference (the calculations seem to imply that leaving it as a level 1 adept makes it gain XP faster...)?

What if you have the arcane trait which seems to help more at higher levels?

Archmages are more likely to get xp than mages, which are more liekly to get xp than adepts. Upgrading is always better.

Formula for gaining XP from wikipedia:

The chance of gaining an XP is as follows (based on promotions):

Channeling I: 25% - 1%/XP possessed (minimum 1%)
Channeling II: 35% - 1%/(2 XP) possessed (minimum 2%)
Channeling III: 40% - 1%/(3 XP) possessed (minimum 3%)

Or with the Arcane trait:

Channeling I: 30% - 1%/XP possessed (minimum 1%)
Channeling II: 45% - 1%/(2 XP) possessed (minimum 2%)
Channeling III: 55% - 1%/(3 XP) possessed (minimum 3%)
Unholy Taint adds 10% to the above chances.

So, as an example, an Arcane Channeling III unit with 99 XP has a 22% chance of gaining another XP. This is the same chance as an Arcane Channeling I unit with 8 XP, or an Arcane Channeling II Unholy Taint unit with 66 XP.

There is no hard limit to the number of XP that can be gained in this manner.

So you should give your adepts more spells/promotions as soon as you can, 'cause you aren't getting anything from holding out. Nowhere in those formulae is the level mentioned, just the xp.

^^^ That's not entirely true. If you give them more levels than they need to upgrade you waste levels on low level spells. Esspecially if you don't have access to mana nodes that will give you more usefull spells.

I only add spells that #1 - Will be useful to me in the near future. #2 Or are necessary to get my unit to a level allowing it to upgrade so it can gain higher level spells.

If you aren't able to upgrade an arcane unit it's usually best not to gain new spells unless they prove useful at the moment. Because you might later gain a mana node giving you more usefull spells, plus there is no benefit to getting a spell earlier than when you need it.

I always liked gaining XP for my Adepts (especially if I had the Raider trait), but combat.

However, in Fire the only sure thing is against barb goblins and mounted units that have withdrawn. Orc Spearmen are a challenge with weapons promotions and even Lizardmen are hard to kill under cover.

Nope, because what the OP is probably referring to is combat XP. You will gain much more XP slaying goblins with an Adept than with an Archmage. You can keep slaying goblins (esp. with raging barbarians) with the Adept without promoting him until you have something like 50 XP, then you promote to Archmage in one turn, as he suggested. I agree with his tactic being more efficient in most cases than upgrading as soon as you can.
