Does anyone else think that Civ IV looks too Cartoony?

Yes it's too cartoony...but that's how they lure you in. By toning done the seriousness, a little civ playing seems harmless...until you've played til 4am. :)

The modders will fix all our graphics problems, don't worry.

I'm really not liking how this is turning out. The multi units crowd up the screen makinghard to see things. And the units look incredibly cartoony. Even the terrain sucks
Can't they take a leaf out of Rome Total War's book and do it how they did it?
Rome Total War had damn better graphics and stuff then this.

1. No Proof. All discussed in another thread
2. So does every other game. Your point?

Actually you missed it all together....

1 and 2 were other peoples points... My point was put in the last sentence of that post :)

I don't like the look of Civ4 at all. The leaderheads, the terrain, the clutteredness, the huge units; none of it appeals to me. In my opinion the graphics certainly don't justify the jump to 3D. Several of the gameplay features/additions don't appeal to me either. As each day passes I get less excited about this game. I'll definitely have to play it before I decide to purchase it or not.

I do feel it's all a matter of getting used to.

It might look messy when zoomed in, but you can also zoom out and get a different view. Also there are a number of filter you can use to get a better insight into a specific thing you are looking at.

I use multiunits in civ3, and it doesnt look crowded at all. From the screenshots of cIV it looks as if the units will be a bit bigger, but not crowding. Its he sort of thing they can easily change in beta.

With all due respect, this is not Rome: Total War. This is Civilization IV, and because of that, the graphics are intended to be more functional than mind-blowing.

The move to 3D and multi-unit graphics and all of that were added to the game to achieve the goal of "what you see is what you get". Now you can just look at the map and see everything that's going on. I think that is a laudable goal, especially after playing a game like Master of Orion III where the interface was completely counterinuitive.

Besides, the great graphics that everyone raves about in Rome: Total War are confined to the battles, which are real time. The strategic, turn-based map of Rome: Total War doesn't look nearly as interesting as that in Civ IV (in my opinion).

I personally like the new leaderheads. I think they look incredibly life-like and full of personality, which most people would regard as a good thing. The Civ III leaderheads, by comparison, were really boring and no less cartoony.

And I think people should stop saying that "they're designing Civ IV to appeal to young kids". That is absolutely ridiculous! No franchise in their right mind would sacrifice their mature audience when it makes up their entire fanbase!

Humm, and pirates was aimed at the older generation? the main buyer is no dought 18-30 in the past ones, but i feel that they would love to also get their hands on the younger populations that buy AOE and so on.

And the graphics are not bad, you know what the problem is? The graphics we see are what the vedio captures of the minotor when they are presenting its bound to look bad that way. I think that point we have surly missed. I think Civ IV has a spectacular setting now. I agree rome total war had much better graphics (and not the battles, the map) but it also took much more requirements. I do hope in these months before the release they just pollish it to make what it already is shine.

The leaderheads are to cartoony but they are done like that to match the terrain and units. IMO.
ANd the terrain and units looks cartoony because they are drawn in a 3d world. THis gives em' a Jimmy Neutron Feel for me. I can live with that. CAN YOU?

I agree and that made me little disappointed with Pirates! also.
Little to much Disney... :(

I don't really care if it looks cartoonish, so long as the game delivers on the gameplay.

Well, not too much... :)

Civ 4 doesn't look realistic enough, civ 3 was somewhat cartoony, but civ 4 crossed the line of reality.

The line of reality is ancient history (!!) in the civ series... I wonder, do I have to buy a new computer for civ 4 or just a new graphics card?

Not likely that it will require either... I remember my old comp taking 10-15 minutes to process the moves by the AI after my turn. I don't think any of the graphix are gonna cause more trouble than that. And they said they've worked to improve the way AI works to cut back on that bogging down.

The entire Sid Meier franchise has always used humour in the game play. I remember a recurring joke in the first two Civilization games where the leaders could say "consequences smonsequences" as a response. I mean, I would find it hard to believe that a leader would say such a silly thing in real life, though it is kind of cute and funny.
In all honesty guys... We had this coming.

To answer the question I think the portraits are fine, they will surely not ruin the gaming experience. The graphics of a game is not a big deal for me though.
