well i intended to upload the save file of my blockade of qin and louis's cities, which shows that they are still somehow trading resources with tokugawa. there is not a single water square adjacent to anyof their cities that is not occupied by at least one frigate.

any ideas?

also the 500kb file limit is ridiculous...if any admins are listening this needs to be changed. the game is just a large map during the 1800s and its 512kb.

Zip it...

And no, the game doesn't recognize those, that's not how trade networks work...

Its kind of rediculous, but here is what you have to do.

Pillage every road square adjacent to the capital. In addition, if there are ocean squares adjacent to the capital, put a naval unit in each of those. In addition to that, if there is a river connecting the capital to any other cities, go to those cities and repeat the process. If the river connects to an allies city, I don't know if there is anything you can do.

So yea, for all intents and purposes, you cant blockade.

A major weakness in game play since in most conflicts (Hot or Cold) the blockade has historically been an integral part of strategic planning and gaining tactical advantage.

I usually blockade enemy ports so that I don't have to worry about sneak attacks.

Depending on how you go about it, you can put a row of like three or four ships to the watery extremes of your empire and probably take up much less ships in doing so, because no only do the ships trying to invade have to go around those lines, but they also get spotted really early. It's definitely possible that they could still sneak in, but they're going to have to know where your lines are and manuever outside that line of sight. The AI probably isn't going to do that. Another technique is to place your ships on the shores of your own, to which the AI will have to fight those ships to land there. The warning is less but if you know he will attack your 'end' ports it's a little more sure of slowing him once the attack run starts. One thing that can aid you in wither plan quite well is if your religion is in some of the other civs ports long the route too.

I guess you mean outside of asking other civs to stop trading with them right? I think it worked better for blockades with Civ3

Agreed. Also, in terms of gameplay:
1) blockades would fix the imbalance between army and navy, especially in the pre-carrier era
2) on maps where civs are separated by continents, it would be a way to fight a (significant) war when neither side is strong enough to invade the other island.

Anyone from Firaxis listening...

not really. i was thinking more the tough-guy british approach of strangling your enemy even if their friends hated you and wanted to keep trading. i think it would translate well into gameplay since cities tend to grow to the happiness limit, which is often determined by traded luxuries.

on a related topic, i also think food should be tradeable between cities (CIVII style), or even between civs, so that you would be able to make better and more realistic use of your land whether its suited to industry or agriculture.
