I only have a 56k dial up connection, and it cuts every 2 hours. What I wanted to know is whether downloading the new patch 1.52 through Civilization 4 remembers how much you have downloaded if your internet connection is cut, or whether you have to start downloading the whole file all over again?

If it is the latter I will never be able to download the whole file. Is there anyone in the UK who would be willing to give me their address and let me send them a CD to put the patch on it and send it back to me? If you live in the Port Talbot, Neath or Swansea area I could even meet you or post it through your door. If anyone knows how I could download this patch any other way can you please tell me.

thanks for any advice,

James

Have you considered getting one of these download programs for 56k modems? They're pretty darn good! They optimize your connection for downloading, so it goes faster, and they automatically resume the download perfectly where they've left off when the connection is cut. I think you really should look into getting one of these programs. There are several free ones available on the internet and they aren't that big so you can download them quickly. I'd rather be doing something like that, especially in these days of massive programs for everything, than having to depend CDs being mailed.

thanks for the advice guys, I didn't know that Firefox had a download manager, or that there were programs to help downloading with 56k modems.

With the last patch I just managed to fit it into my 2 hours downloading time but this new patch is about twice as big: very unfortunate.

sorry Flak, but if you read this again, could you tell me the names of any of those programs, I guess they are just called download managers so I will take a look on Google.

thanks again to both of you.

Try things like GetRight or FlashGet (they have free versions).
They are good since they support download resume as well as acclerated download (mutiple connection on same file, buit different segment, increases speed slighly).

Then find one of the patch 1.52 links that supports use of download managers.

Then start download at night, turn on options for auto-resume/redial and shutdown when done and you are ready. Then at morning you'll have your file.

That how I do up to 100MB file on poor dial-up.

P.S.
I had no look with Firefox built in manager. It is never capable of resuming my own downloads.

thanks everyone,

I followed Flak's advice, searched Google, and found FreeDownloadManager which did the job. In fact, it has helped me download a number of other things too. It seems like a decent program and is worth giving a try if anyone else also has dial up.

Player1 fanatic,

please tell me how to find a mirror that supports use of download managers. While using FreeDownloadManager I could get the file onto my computer but I am unable to unzip the file. When I attempt to I receive the error: "Unexpected end of file". Is this because I am not using a mirror that supports download managers, or another reason?
