Dvorak keyboards

I've grown so used to the QWERTY style boards that I don't think I'd enjoy using the Dvorak style. I've never actually tried it.

Bah! I've seen so many people rave about how easy it is to type on dvorak keyboards, and how it helps them speed up while typing. Unfortunately, the bottleneck in typing speed is generally the brain and the hands, not the keyboard. I typed on a dvorak board for 3 months and could type a bit over 60 WPMs at the end of that period, I can type over 100 gwam on a qwerty board so naturally I'll stick with what I've got. Best of luck to ya with the switch corny :king:

IIRC
Qwerty keyboards came into existence because secretaries were jamming up typewriters typing too fast with Dvorak.

I remember they were jamming up typewriters, but I think that the dvorak keyboard was created because the qwerty one sucked so bad. As I recall, the qwerty keyboard was set up so that keystrokes for the most part would be on opposite sides of the keyboard, allowing the typewriter to not jam up so much.

If someones brain can't get over QWERTY then obviously they will type slower. It just takes time really....lots of time.

Yes, but the fact is that even after giving people years to learn Dvorak, they could at the most only type a few words per minute faster than with qwerty, like I said, the finger movements are not the bottleneck, having a dvorak keyboard is like plugging a radeon 9800 pro into a 286 system to replace your 9700 pro, it's just not worth the wasted time. ;)

Yeah, IIRC it had something to do with the placement of the rods attached to the keys that would collide if you typed to fast on the original keyboards, which were arranged alphabetically.

i have decided to give the dvorak keyboard a chance. it has taken me a couple minutes to type this but im getting better at it.

definately requires patience though. have memorized a, e, and . locations. getting a little better.
