Whats the best strategy to capture a ton of foreign workers? Also, whats a good strategy to build lots of SoDs?

More slaves (Foreign Workers)= Destroy towns that you have captured. And as for SOD's build lots of cavs and fast offensive units :).

(Edit) I don't mean destroy towns that you have already captured, I mean when you kill off all the defenders on an enemy town chose to destroy it rather than capturing. This will give you more slaves. But I hardly ever destroy enemy towns.

Hmm... What about when I don't feel like razing cities or playing as Maya?

Yes, capture big cities. Or capture any city with workers in the vicinity. I have found, at least in my own games, that one monumentally stupid move the AI makes often is to move endangered workers into the city that is about to be attacked with a huge SoD.

Well we have to keep in mind of the AI's vanity in that they will never dream of losing a city to the hugely disadvantaged human player

Dem dayumn robots think they're so much better 'n humans, don't they? :D

But seriously, in a recent game I got no fewer than 14 slaves from taking a city after the workers retreated into it.

I am starting to feel entitled to those workers.

Thats still the part of the AI that is smart!

You've never seen the AI move its huge SoD out of a city they where defending, that is about to be attacked by your medicore SoD, to try to grab one of your nearby workers. :crazyeye: (also known as the Byzantium bikini babe tactic, but I can't find the thread at the moment, its somewhere in the stories and tales forum)

The AI is extremely stupid with workers no doubt. They have maybe 10-20 workers working useless land all the time, just sign a right of passage, move in, you know the rest.

Yeah, my own workers do spend a lot of time reworking the land around captured cities.

Bait them.

Keep a spot of ideal land on your fringe ready for the settler. Road it, make sure that it has resources or luxes and have units at the ready. Sooner or later, the AI will zero in on it and regularly send settlers there. Pop them as the arrive and fill up on slaves.

Other than that - icing a few highly-populated AI cities and harvesting the workers is the only other best bet IMO.

Capture AI settlers. They may not build enough workers, but they sure as heck build plenty of settlers. My favourite sport is picking off wandering settler/escort pairs early in the game, especially when they belong to an enemy across on the other side of the map - by the time I finally see their "army" (say a pair of archers...), they'll negotiate peace.

Oh, I do go after settlers as well. Two workers for the price of one. :D

I don't need to capture enemy workers.

I just buy them off the AI (AFAIK, when they have two for sale, that means it's a settler, so if you buy both, you get rid of their settler. :D)

But it would cost you less and it would be more convenient if you just took it off them :mischief:.
