I've found that editor generated maps are so much better than Civ3's in-game map generator. I'm beginning to generate all my maps w/ the 1.21g editor, then load them in 1.29f as a scenario to play. Of course, I save it quickly w/ squinted eyes, so I don't see the details before saving. I highly recommend it.

what's better? Cause you already know the map before starting the game?

No, I don't look at it at all. They just come out w/ much more variety than in-game generated maps. You know how somtimes you select a pangea map and you end up w/ an archipelago map and vice versa, well the editor generated maps give you want you want w/ a lot of neat characteristics, such as really good strategic choke points, etc.

This is an illusion dojoboy, because the software is exactly the same.

The key elements in map generation inside the editor can be found in understanding the impact of the random world seed combined with some of the basic settings such as number of civs available etc.

If you took the world seed from a map that you did not like and inserted it into the editor as the world seed then you would get exactly the same map as you would from the in-game generator as long as the other condition settings were the same.

One is not better and/or more efficient than the other you just get a different draw from the RNG. There is ablsoutely no real difference in the level of variety.
