It has to be 3 different civs, where different means 3 civ that are not the same and also that one of them cant be you

I'm pretty sure this is false. I seem to recall using my own paintings before. I'll test it out in my next game to confirm though. I think ggmoyang pinpointed what the problem was.

NOTE: I really don't like how painting and artifacts share the same art symbol. I have no clue why they can't be different, with The Louvre and Museums having their slot graphics as a split to show that both types are allowed.

Hm no i had no artifacts but i used one of my own Civ maybe thats the problem.

yes, you had it in different civs, but, the age must same(for classical only, for medieval only, etc) IMO

I just loaded a saved game as Korea and have a Korean piece in there and am receiving the bonus. Maybe it would help for you to write out all three pieces you've got in there so we can see what the problem is.

Also, they do have to be from different civs AND different eras.

Well, they want to show the fact that museums can fit either, which makes it more difficult. You would need a symbol that shows that either art or artifacts can generally be used, plus the separate symbols for art or artifacts.

To give a concrete example, having the Louvre show two artifact slots and two art slots would be inaccurate because, if you wanted to, you could put in four of one (you'll just miss out on the theming bonus).

I'm having problems with the hermitage as well. I'm not getting the theming bonus either. I'm pretty sure I have it right, except if your own civilization doesn't count. If that's the case, the description should be changed to be clearer.

Japan Industrial Era
Korea Renaissance Era
France Modern Era

I'm sure this fulfils the different era, different civilisation requirement. Is this a bug? Or am I just an idiot and missing something obvious? :)

I got it wrong too because I put an artifact in. I don't remember what it was called, but it's something I've never heard of before. I think there should be an extra symbol for artifacts. Maybe a little arrowhead in the corner or something.

You are allowed to use your own paintings for one of them. What are the names of the paintings you listed (it doesn't matter though we might catch something by actually listing out the names)?

Also, just in case this is messing anyone up, it has to say "Industrial", "Modern", etc. It also gives a date but the date listed has nothing to do with how it is classified (so it's possible to create it in 1020 yet have it be Industrial).

That's why I proposed a split graphic for the slots. There could be a line drawn diagonally from, say, the lower left corner to the upper right one with the painting symbol in the upper left triangle and the artifact symbol in the lower right. This would mean that either a painting or an artifact could go there (so no problem with The Louvre/museums).

Yeah, that could work.

What symbol for artifacts? The archaeology symbol or something else (perhaps an arrowhead?)

Ah, one of mine was an artefact!! I swapped for a painting and made it work. You gotta pay close attention.

thanks for the help.

No prob, I suspect this is the problem with the other people having trouble with this too. Those icons are tricky!

The fact that the icons for art and artifact are the same is really a pain when you have a bigger empire and a few successful archaeologists. But, who knows, maybe they will alter the icons a bit.

Having just a single icon for each of the types of Great Works is a pain, in general. If you ask me the symbol should include not only the distinction between art and artifact, but also the civ of origin (color coding?) and era of origin, so I wouldn't have to mouse over each of them to learn something the game could've told me at a glance.

Something like an arrowhead would be really good - a simple, easily recognizable shape that can be identified on the spot even if the graphic is a bit small.
