Hi,
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit) and I just tried installing the latest patch, 1.74.

The installation appeared to fail, with the error:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Sid Meier's Civilization 4. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

This happened pretty much at the very end of the installation.

I tried reinstalling, but I get the same error. When I try to run the game, I get this error:

An error {-5004: 0x80041f42} has occurred.

I've read through a number of the threads here ... I tried deleting/renaming the InstallShield directory and trying again. And I tried installing as Administrator ... no go.

HELP!

Hi Furiey,

I have just the standard Civ 4 game, no add ons or expansions (yet), and I have a store-bought CD version.

I just received an email from take2support, advising me to install the newest DirectX update. I did this, but it did not help. I still get exactly the same errors.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If I get any more help from take2support, I will summarize and post here for others.

Cheers.

Hi,

As I promised, I am posting a follow up to describe the solution.

I received help from take2support. The person suggested that I install the most recent version of Direct X 9.0c.

I did this, and attempted to reinstall the patch, but I received the same error again.

I repeated this process several times.

Take2support informed me that I should ignore the error. Although the installer appears to say that there is still the same error as before, that the patch should now have been installed.

I had to delete the InstallShield directory and restart my machine, but Civ did then work.

So ... the end story ... ignore the error if you are sure everything is right.

Very odd Installer behavior, but I'm happy it all works now!

Cheers.
