Hi all! This is the first time using this forum---great by the way. Anyways, here is my problem...For some reason, I am unable to conduct espionage missions. I have read and re-read the instruction book that came with the game. I have established an embassy with all of the other civs and have built the intelligence agency. When I double click on one of the other civs capital, all I can do is either investigate city or steal technology. What am I doing wrong?! Am I missing something? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to place a spy you have to click on the icon on the city names where you built your intel agency. Then you may place a spy.

To do actual intel operations using the spy or your embasy I do the following. In the lower right hand side of the screen you have your "stats window" it shows the year, what tech advance you are researching, the unit you are currently moving etc.. There is a group of boxes along the right side of that box. One is for diplomacy, one for graphs, one for espionage, and one for I can not remember ;) They each have a letter in them and the background is the same color as the boarder of the window. Click on the one for espionage. Pick the country you wish to act against. Then pick either to use your spy or embassy and you can figure it out from here :)

Good luck!

Spying is VERY expensive. Don't get your hopes up.

I've found spying to be very useful when successful. The info most valuable to me is their troop locations.

Another good thing about using espionage is when you really want a war, but want the AI to start it, sometimes you can keep trying to use spies enough times and the computer will get madder and madder until you go to war.

Yeah, the spy game is very expensive, but it is to your advantage to at least place a spy in neighboring civs. I find the intelligence you get on the military advisor on their precise battle order to be worth it. I admit I've never really used the other options because of cost. I mean, steal tech? You can usually buy it from them outright for a fraction of the cost and make a friend in the process.

I don't find spies very useful either...I can't even get one into a city!!! When the parts of the spaceship are built by another civ, the computer tells you so why do you need a spy?
