ever since i installed the 121 patch, 'fast' units never retreat from battle

I am pretty sure I have seen them retreat since I installed the patch, but now I can't tell if my memory is playing tricks on me. Either way, it happens a lot less than it did before.

When you say "never" how many instances are you talking about? 100 times? I am using 1.21f and units retreat the same as they did in earlier patches.

One thing I am not sure about, though. I wonder if the unit has to have enough "movement points" left to retreat....

Units retreat (I have seen it). However, it is not a certain thing anymore, which is likely the cause of your observation. As the readme file states, units now have a chance to retreat based on their experience level. I believe these probabilities are settable in the 1.21 editor.

actually, my units never have retreated since i installed the 1.21 patch, and i figured out why. the option for 'fast units' in the editor has been substituted with 'NOT USED' - therefore the option for fast units does not exist anymore.

can anyone help?

Units still retreat in the latest patch. You are right that there was at least one unused label attribute that they did change to "not used" with the latest patch. However, the game determines that a unit has the ability to retreat by whether or not it has more than one move point, the defender has only 1, and the defender is not redlined. Assuming those three conditions are met and the attacker is currently redlined, a die will be rolled to see if the attacker retreats.

I was just playing as the Aztecs this moring, they retreated a lot of times...now I remember why I hated them when I was fighting them, but I have noticed a slightly lower retreat in general thought after installing the new patch

They retreat with 1.21, sometimes; sometimes not. They should not always retreat as with the early patches as it gives fast units a tremendous strength advantage being able to keep whittling down the enemy who has to build nw units while the other has to just heal the fast ones.

Are you talking about UNITS->UNIT ABILITIES?

If so hold down the control key and select the properties you want. You may want to remove the "UNUSED" attribute. Who knows what that does?

They do. However, a dice roll will determine that now. From the editor,

conscipt 33%
regular 50%
veteran 58%
elite 66%

Also, from the earlier patch which still holds true. Unit will not retreat if opponent has only 1hp left. Hope this helps.

Well, I had a stack of Elite cavalry with FULL movement points attacking a city defended by infantry, just to test this retreat theory of elite units retreating 2/3 of the time. THEY ALL DIED,. not a single one of the 12 elite cavalry i had won a battle, knocked down the defender to one h.p., or retreated.

The odds of none of the 12 elite cav retreating, 'according to the editor', is 531,441 to 1.

I doubt my retreating works.

I believe that the unit has to have some movement points left to retreat. If a unit uses it last movement point to attack, then I don't think it can really retreat or it's chance of retreat is reduced. I frequently (read that as more than never;)) have units retreat but I attack with units that have the most remaining movement first.

Like I said, I used cavalry with ful movement left (3 units), and NONE of them retreated.

I'm gonna print that post and pin it over my bed.
The first post I see from Zouave where he does NOT criticize Civ3 !

Have you ever made any modifications to your game? I have not and usually attribute these unusual problems with modifications that have gone astry. If you are sure that you have never modified your game and have this problem, I would suggest an uninstall and reinstall. You are having some abnormal problems and missing out on the way the game plays normally.

I doubt it too. Have you seen the AI retreat?

This also touches on another issue for me. Infantry is impossible to overcome with cavalry unless the numbers are so lopsided and you're willing to take massive losses, even if they do retreat sometimes.

I have seen the AI retreat. Zulu Impi. It's rare because they rarely build fast troops compare to human and if you always attack with fast troop, they can't retreat too.

As for whether the retreating works, I have no doubt about it since my troops retreats numerous times. However, I cannot explain friedmad's experience. I guess with so many people playing the game, bad luck does happen. We can check if it is indeed bad luck if you will post the game.
