If you get Leonardo's workshop, it becomes cost-effective to build cheap units and upgrade them (horses to cavalry, or spearmen to infantry). But the cheap units aren't available. Right?

Wrong! All you have to do is rearrange your trade network to deprive certain cities of resources. As an extreme example, a city with no roads to it can produce warriors, which can then travel to the nearest barracks and become swordsmen.

It's much cheaper to rush-build spearmen and upgrade to infantry than to rush-build infantry, even without Leonardo's Workshop.

i thought so,
i conquered an formerly English island and build many outdated units over there, untill i finally build a harbor.
after that i upgraded them all and shipped them to the next island to fight.

i don´t understand how the price of upgrading works though. Sometimes upgrading 20 units is four times a expensive as upgrading only 2. How come...?
