Almost in every game, just after pressing the Enter key at the end of turn, from time to time (around 2 or 3 times per game) there's a fade-out and then the game continues normally. It does not seem to be a bug.

Does anybody know what causes this fade-out? I play version 474.03.

I've also had this happen to me while playing.

Once is after studying invention, and I haven't paid much attention to when else it happens. I think I have version .05, although I could be wrong; it's been a while since I've played.

I do believe it is when your barracks become obsolete.

As far as I can tell, this happens when a wonder becomes obsolete and you don't have it. So, e.g., as Irish Caesar wrote, after researching Invention (and not having Hanging Gardens).

The game would display "Invention cancels the effect of Hanging Gardens" headline and then fade out. When you don't have the wonder, no newspaper is displayed, but somehow the fadeout occurs. Guess this is a (minor) bug.

It's great to see this thread reborn again, after 4 years! Thank you!

You're welcome... Anyway, my theory about obsoleting wonders (that one don't have) was wrong. The fade-out does occur when one researches invention (and I still think it occurs on some occasions if you don't have the Hanging Gardens and some other civ researches it), but it has something to do with changing the graphics of the advisors.

However, I think the (occasional) fadeout has something to do with diplomacy. Sometimes, when you are much stronger than some neighbouring civ you are at peace with (and they have some units near yours), the fadeout occurs from time to time (usually afte AI shuffling some of its units); it is as if they wanted to contact you but then "changed their mind" (and no diplomatic summit occured). Also, the fadeout occurs if you are at war with a civ, used diplomat to subvert some city and approaches another city and/or unit. Usually the civ wants to talk to you after subversion, yet in some cases they don't want to (and then the fadeout/fadein occurs).

Just my $0.02
