I am pretty sure many players or at least some of them have had the same problem I have.

After playing for a few turns (usually around 30 mins or so) game crashes (crash to desk) and I get this message :

Fail to allocate video memory error or something - then source/main/civilization4/sdks/gamebryo2_0/corelibs/nidx9renderer/nidx9VBManager.cpp, line: 1019

It suggets that I reduce graphic settings though I should not have any problem (intel core duo processor, 1024 mb ram DDR2, ATI radeon X1600 with 256 mb of allocated video ram). I still did it but that does not do the trick

I've downloaded the latest drivers for my card and reinstalled direct X from the Civ4 DVD. Nothing seems to do the trick.

I would gladly receive a bit of help this does start to annoy me.

P.S.: - I'm running version 1.61 of CIV 4 never had any problems before
- this problem only seems to happen when I use a huge map and it seems that it happens rather in the modern period than in the ancient times.

Thank you for your help

Turn down the graphics settings. This helped me a lot with this problem.

Do you have 256mb hypermemory or 256 mb dedicated?

If this is related to huge maps/later eras, well.. the only thing you can do is to attempt to reduce the load of your computer. Turn down graphics settings, disable all the nice stuff (animations, multi unit graphics...), perhaps also movies, audio... Close all other applications, incl. antivirus programs, etc. There's also an ini file option that allows to clamp max frame rate, try e.g. 60 or 40 or less.

Please experiment if any of this can help you...

reducing graphic settings does not solve the problem. I'll try that ini option and tell you if it works.

I have 256 mb of dedicated memory.

Thanks for the quick response

Interesting. I had this problem and bumped the game down to Low-Res textures (Everything else Medium , midrange resolution) and it ran smoothly.

I am running the same system you are. Depending on how big the map is, maybe try even lower detail, or turn off particle effects.

Well, launch civ; go to Options, Graphics Settings (or so), there should be something like detail, use medium or low instead of high.
