Upon a new game starting with the 1.52 patch newly installed, when usually the button would appear "Play Game" after everything is initialized, I get a message that says this:

FATAL_ERROR
Your system has run out of video memory. Please trying reducing [sic] your video settings.
File:\main\civilization4.bak\SKDs\Gamebryo2_0\Core Libs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9RenderedTextureData.cpp, Line:167

OK

What the hell does that mean? Other than the maddening "trying reducing" grammar error, it seems like it's trying to tell me something.

Oh yeah, and there's another error when I click OK:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: ...raxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Civilization4.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

OK

I would REALLY appreciate help, without being slammed or called an idiot, please.

This is not a problem with my computer, because it has been able to run this game perfectly on high settings before, with a small few sound issues and every once in a while a crash at a wonder video. But nothing major. Until this.

I feel the same way you do! I have the exact same error messages poping up. Can you play on the Standard world screens? I can play the game just not on the Large and Huge, it gives me that error when I try. I was not able to play the same ones without the patch, but when I installed the patch I now get the runtime error. I have made another post with my computer specs but here they are again.

* I was wondering if yours was similar?

 SOMEONE PLEASE...if you could just give a little insight, I have tried reducing my video card acceleration and it just crashes on the smaller worlds when I do that.

THANKS:crazyeye:

I have the same problem. I have a slightly different video card...sorry no dxdiag available ATM. My system is well above the minimum specs and is fully updated. My video card is an ATI x600 256Mb. If my graphics settings are on high i crash within 5 to 10 minutes; if i set the graphics settings to medium (which is a pathetic fix) I can play for upwards of an hour before crashing. Take 2 needs to spend some time taking a second look at their memory "fix". 1.09 never crashed like this for me. I'm thinking I may be going back to 1.09 until they can figure out the issues.

Have you tried to get in touch with their support.....IT SUCKS! I have tried calling emailing and NO RESPONSE! They have piss poor people working for them.
I have updated my ATI drivers and now I can get the larger maps but now I have the BLACK MAP problem, I have no hacks or mods installed and I have tried every combo I can think, and still NO LUCK, just makes me angry that at least before I was able to play a WHOLE game with the Standard map and now I can not play at all cause now it crashes.

I have the exact same problem and same message when I get into the game a bit. My computer is a bit slower and has an older video card than yours (but still better than minimum req) and it happens to me on small size world. I have 1.52. The game is otherwise pretty playable even with high details until somewhere around the middle ages. I don't know what to do.

I am having the same problem since installing this patch. My game is now broken unless I can revert back to the other patch... ughh. This is not to say that was even perfect considering after 11 or so installations just to get it to even start then applying a patch written by a player just to make it stop crashing!!!! Now I made the mistake of patching to v1.52 and the thing is now totally and irrevocably screwed.

I give up.

I got that exact message last night. I am running a ATI 9600 256meg card, and under 1.52 was able to play about 6 hours total on high graphics setting on a huge map before I got slapped with that message. Just when I thought 1.52 had solved my problems, now this!

What's the deal? Would turning my graphics down help? I don't mind doign that..but damn am I tired of dealing with these problems.

Please report on anythign you find out, and when I get home from work I'll take a look and see about posting an error log.

 I turned down my graphics settings to medium and it still crashes, makes no difference. Tinkering with the vid acceleration is something I havent tried but I have a hunch it won't work.

It always happens when I pan around so the solution is to just not do that.... or get that blasted thing off my HD until they get it right.

BTW I am using ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB.

Further, I had no problems with crashing prior to v1.52 however I did need to install the patch by Harkonnen.

Anyone know if or where I can find the first patch? :(

Have you loaded SP2 for xp ? ATI drivers can be very insistent on needing SP2.

My edition of XP has SP2 pre-installed and my card driver is recent so that's not the problem. As far as the link agentjones provided, I have my doubts whether it will help at all. Users experiencing this problem are not having problems intializing the renderer rather with sudden crashes during otehrwise normal game operation with an error report stating the system is out of video memory then quits the runtime. This never occurred until after installing the 1.52 patch. :(

I have a laptop and a desktop that I run CIV on. The desktop is the one that gets this out of video memory error and CTD. I have played several games all the way through on my laptop with no crashes or anything using 1.52, and my laptop is only 512Mb ram, mobile AMD sempron 3000+ (about 1.6 GHz), and an SiS m760GX(64Mb). It lags and movies don't really work, but it runs fine and doesn't get much slower in late game than it does at the start. My desktop is running the game and it's movies smoothly, but gets this memory error halfway through the game. It doesn't make sense to me.

im new to pc lingo and have no idea what any1 is really talking about. I have updated my pc and got all the requirements and the game keeps freezing and then say big error. i have a nvidia graphics. i have played with all the sounds and graphics and stuff and the game still freezes. i even set it in a window and not full screen and it werked for a while then started all the crap again.

I installed the December 2005 DirectX release, as well as re-installed the 1.52 patch. My GOTM2 save didn't crash as it had before, and I was hoping the problem was fixed.

Alas, after about 30 minutes of play, the game crashed again, with the same error as described above.

Could you please postyour dxdiag fileso we can have a look at your system setup ?

I, too have this problem. Took a screenshot of the error but can't post it for some reason. Computers certainly are our friends :) .
For me, the problem usually occurs after playing for about an hour, though recently it's been crashing more often. I have a laptop.
If anyone with this error downloaded the patch AgentJones presented, does it work?

I was trying to play FFH 080 just now as the greeks on an archipelago map, but when the progress bar reached "Finishing" in the load, the game Crashed on me and displayed that message.

So i tried the game again in the hope that it was a fake, but it happened again. I tried it with the vanilla Civ and leaders mods with the same result.

I then went and searched My Computer for the file specified, but could not fnd it anywhere!!!

ive been playng Civ4 with the patch for weeks before, sometimes whole days and no problems at all! but now out of the blue

Yes, I have done so, and I don't completely understand why he posted it as something "new". It's simply the 1.52 update, which the originaly author stated had been installed.
