This error appears every couple of years, and has always been a fatal error...

this time I want to try and solve it...

The ANINAME line we all know comes from the unit script. Ok...

I know the integrity of this section of the pedia file is good, because ive used this mod a gazillion times.

I got this error the first time I played the mod after importing to a new biq. so that I could change the resource list.

I replaced the pedia file with the pedia file that's been playtested multiple times, to the new folder. No changes other than the resources were madee after the full import to the new biq. No effect. Assuming the change would be instant which I think it would be. Changes to the pedia file effect the current saved game.

Anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

Well, on Windows, since Microsoft writers can rot in hell for eternity, I usually reopen the file after saving to make sure the saves took place. Sometimes you think you save but you didn't.

This can occur in multiple places. The save might not actually take place in the original location, it may get lost when transferring to a new location, and/or it may get lost in the new location.
Best bet, with Windows, is to make a new unprotected file on an external hard drive, make sure you - your user name, not merely admin. - have full power and access, and then do your work on that file. Then copy/paste to the scenario folder.

Sometimes, if your scenario is flagged as protected, and there is nothing you seemingly can do, sometimes you can rename the file you want changed, then paste in the new modified file, and give it the old file's original name.
I recently had this issue tinkering with your desert tiles. Changes took in the original scenario folder, but when I pasted to a new scenario, the changes wouldn't make the leap. So I had to use the above method.

Only other thing I can think of is, did you check the scenario properties and make sure its looking at the right scenario folder?

Final edit: Don't import. Open the original biq, regenerate map, import map you want, "save as" with new name. Apply changes to resources. Save.

ronning, if you are runnuing Win7 (or higher) the following could happen - and happened to me several times (with Win7):

If you replace a file - in your case a text file (the pediaIcons file) - the old version of that file in Win7 is saved in a folder that in German is called Kompatibiltätsdateien. I don´t know the English term for that folder. It could be something like "compability folder".

The old saved file overwrites your new pediaiconsfile - and of course your mod cannot find the new entries in the pediaiconsfile, because your mod still operates with your old file. You have to find that folder and to delete that old version of your pediaiconsfile in that folder, so your new file in the textfolder of your mod can be approached by the game.

Yes, I think you are correct about a copy issue.
I changed the resource list using the original Mod Biq. Its more labor but its working fine.

Sometimes you just have to do it the hard way... ;)

As it seems another civer has the same problems, I made a screenshot of the location of the register called "Kompabilitätsdateien". The post and the screenshot can be found here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=14105262&postcount=147.

This is very good news for all fans of Civ 3. :)

Sorry ronning, for that issue I have no special idea.

I had a string of inexplicable errors, one after another. Things like aniname errors and missing files that shouldn't have been missing. They'd been working just before the errors... While I hope it's not the case for you, what I found was that my drive was corrupting. I didn't get all my stuff backed up in time before total meltdown. Point being, make sure you have a back up of your work elsewhere. Hope you get it all solved.

im not sure either, the first problem was solved by just hand changing the scenario resource list and methodically replacing resources on the map, and other tedious long-cuts.

But this new problem is a mod killer, I cant do anything if the drop down menu does not work.

I uninstalled steam and re-downloaded steam (which I despise ) and Civ III Complete. now getting all the usual errors that anything from Steam comes with. Editor cant find exe. for PTW or CIV III, blah blah cant find Pal00, or any terrain files...

That I can fix with work, but the drop down menu still doesn't work. cant mod if I cant get that menu to drop down. very strange.

At least now im getting "Something"

I get this error sometimes however, usually just closing and reopening the program will eliminate this error...

and the drop down still opens after the error... not this time.

Also tried to open it by using the "Edit Rules" in the toolbar, no effect.

All the other pop ups in the tool bar work, except the scenario properties which also does not work.

Not only my mod is affected, all the civ edit mods are affected.

Have you tried opening it with Quintillus' editor? He has been taking account of more up-to-date OS, but the 10 year old firaxis editor is looking for a 10 year old directory structure.

may be an option. there has to be an explanation, no changes were made to my system. I generally think Steam to be the root of all evil, I despise it, however ive had limited success at finding a clean download of the game. The last attempt gave me the game, but the files were jumbled around in what looked like a security feature. The files were all there but assigned to different folders and moved around in a random looking way.

If a clean reinstallation didn't solve the issue I don't know what it could be. Maybe my keyboard is malfunctioning and holding the menu popup closed, or the mouse.

Ill give Quintillus editor a shot.

Can you provide a link?

ronning, I had a look into the editor about that problem. Can it be, that in the Scenario registry of your editor you haven´t enabled the option "Custom rules"?

If the option "Custom rules" is not enabled (seen by a hook in the box ahead that option) you cannot edit the rules and have a situation as you did describe it.

yes all checked. alt-enter hotkey does not work, nor do any of the hotkeys.

everything works fine except the drop down for the rules edit, and the scenario properties. I can place land, units, do the fog, and all other things except edit the rules, or scenario properties.

In Picture I am depressing the EDIT key, nothing happens

Even if I start a NEW scenario, or try to change an existing scenario , none will drop that menu. It must be the keyboard, I don't know. Ive unplugged the keyboard and tried using the mouse. no effect. Ive unplugged the mouse and tried using the hotkeys to drop the menu. That didn't work either. I reinstalled Steam and Civ III, no effect

That´s a pitty. I really hoped, the disabled "Custom Rules" box could be the source of the problem. As this doesn´t work, may be you should try the Quintillus-Editor. To run that editor you need Java.

I'm running Windows 8.1, and I sometimes run into problems saving files because of the insane 'administrator' rules that apply to it. I have to left-click some programs and click 'run as administrator' to get them to function correctly. One thing that seems to help: I installed my Civ3 and Civ3Edit programs into a folder on my desktop, initially just so that I could get to the whole thing easily. This seems to have prevented alot of problems that I've heard about. I also used the 'compatibility' function to get it to work properly.

Could the translation of the german word that Civinator was talking about could be "Virtual Store"? Because I've heard of files disappearing into that rabbit hole.
