Mine would have to be the Modern Armor. I love these things, perfect for offense and defense....:D

Well, before we go listing off how we love good combat units, I think we should give the Settler unit credit where its due. Without these guys nobody could do anything.

My fav unit is a nice ICBM. Now when a one island city has a few mech. infatry gaurding it, your marines won't have to go on suicide(sp?) missions, they also take care of loaded transports, and after i beat the game (or lose:( ) i use up all my ICBM just for fun even on my own cities if it was a military victory.

Screw settlers, OCC games are possible. Just TRY making a game without workers, though, and you'll be in for a world of hurt. I find that most of my wars are won because I have an overwhelming number of workers compared to the AI...getting all my important cities completely railed up makes all those wars I seem to get forced into a lot easier. Cities get fully equipped and make those nifty little tank thingies SO much faster when every tile has been improved for hundreds of years. Blitz conquest vs. a less-developed AI is also much easier with workers to spare, plus no single scrap of pollution lasts a full turn.

The choice is obvious, people.

Well if you went purely by coolest. I would say Infantry then Marine, then Cavalry(!). Yes horses are much cooler than "a vehicle". Cossacks are cool too also Riders. Modern Armor is close also.

Usefulness would be settler very, very important.

Yep, The Mighty Worker ... (AND NO, I am *not* a communist ...)

I really like Industrious as one of my two Civ attributes. I will often take a 6-pack (4, at least, 5 is nice, 6 is usually overkill) of workers in an invasion stack, and after landing them with 4 offensive/6 bombardment/4 defensive units directly on or if not possible, adjacient to, a Resource tile. Then hammer out that Fortress. Then pull them out to the ships for diversion elsewhere (not always, depends on the situation of course).

Rapidly building up improvements everywhere, clearing forest for the shields, then replanting forest asap etc. Workers rule! (BTW, once in a great while that cleared forest will be a Grassland with shield, these, I mine of course rather then replanting... now you get two shields like the forest, but with 2 food instead of 1 ... plus the addl. commerce after you get the road built. Somethimes its better for food production needs to irrigate rather then replant forest, but usually I want the shields ...) I wish we had a Combat Engineers unit that could build things like workers, have more defense, maybe couldn't add to pop .... Man, if they could build Airbase (outside of cities) like in CIv II!!!!! This, I really miss!

War units are fun, but the Worker is definitely a key to the game IMHO. Yes, you often wind up with a mighty lot of them in excess, but then unlike war units that give a pittance upon disbanding, you can use the Worker to add Pop to cities ... another reason that they are key. Yea, I will vote for Worker.

Despite what you might think from all that, I usually play pretty miltantly, but I find that without using workers wisely and expeditiously, the odds on conquering the world is definitely lessened .... and usually significantly enough that I fail.

Typical Canadian!

The rest of the world wants to discuss war and you guys talk about peacefully settling down.

Typical American!

Building a capitalist empire on the back of those poor workers. Do they even get minimum wage?

:D :D

Theyt get their 1g per turn like every other unit I've got...except for that cheap labor from Mexico...I mean, Azteca. Those guys work for free, and sometimes even volunteer to serve as bait when I want to set off MPPs against neighboring civs (don't worry, I always recapture them eventually and set them back to work, good as new ;) ). Ain't capitalism great?

For the whole game I would say modern armor. Those guys can beat anything but mech infantry and other armor. For the majority of the game cavalry are good. I really like there 3 movement points. I can take 3 or 4 cities on a single turn.

Infantry rock. They are significantly better than any other military unit for quite a while.

I like any unit that "tips the balance."

Swordmen
Cavalry
Armor

If it looks like I will beat a nearby Civ to the advance for one of these units, I almost always plan a war shortly thereafter. Especially with armor. Unstoppable.

BUT... my favorite unit has to be ARTILLERY. No other unit allows for a sustained campaign against evenly matched opponents. Allowing for the destruction of menacing invading forces... and flattening able defenders. Artillery has been the deciding factor for most of my modern campaigns. Oh... very effective for its spiteful ability to ruin roads and other improvements too. "Massed Artillery"... smells like victory.

Thankfully, the computer rarely uses barrage units on the offensive.
